BernePark in Bottrop-Ebel is a former sewage treatment plant that was turned into a public park. The two large round clarifier tanks became a garden and an open space, the old buildings host events, and a row of concrete sewer pipes became sleeping pods in a small, unusual hotel. A visit takes about an hour; if you sleep in a pipe, book early and check the season. The Bottrop Day Routes include a BernePark route with a rain swap.
For decades the Emscher, the river that runs through the northern Ruhr, was used as an open sewer. When the Emscher system was rebuilt with new underground sewers, many old treatment plants were no longer needed. The one at the mouth of the Berne stream in Ebel, close to the Rhine-Herne Canal, was converted into a park and opened to the public around 2010.
The result is a mix of industrial form and planting. You walk around and into the two huge round tanks. One holds a sunken garden designed by the Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudolf, with grasses and perennials that change through the year. The other was reshaped as an open space you can look into from the rim. Paths and lawns connect them with the stream and the canal side.
The best-known feature is the small hotel made from large concrete drainage pipes. Each pipe has a double bed, a light, a blanket and a door you can lock. Toilets and showers are not in the pipes; you use shared facilities on site. Bookings are made online, and the hotel has worked on a pay-what-you-want basis.
Things to know before you book:
If the pipes are full or closed, the Where to Stay in Bottrop guide compares normal hotels and apartments by area.
BernePark is in the south of Bottrop in the district of Ebel, near the border with Essen and the canal.
BernePark is also a good place to understand one of the largest river restoration projects in Europe. The Emscher carried waste water in open concrete channels because mining subsidence made underground sewers impossible. After the mines closed, the water management association rebuilt the system with new underground sewers and began turning the old channels back into a more natural river. The project took around three decades. Information boards in the area explain the changes, and the walk along the restored stream shows the result.
For photographers, the round tanks give strong shapes, especially from the rim in low autumn light. For families, the open spaces and paths make a relaxed stop on a bike day.
Combine the visit with a coffee or snack in Ebel or back in the centre; facilities at the park itself are limited outside event days.
The park itself is a public space and normally free to visit. Events and the pipe hotel have their own conditions. Check the current information before you go.
No. The pipe hotel is seasonal and usually closed in the cold months. Check the booking calendar for your dates.
About an hour for the park. Add a canal walk or bike ride for a half day.
The Bottrop Day Routes include BernePark with nearby stops, and Getting Around Bottrop by Bus & Train explains the bus links and bike options. For an evening read, Der Himmel zwischen den Streben is a novel set in Bottrop. All are available in English, Spanish or German.
Times, seasons and prices are planning estimates. Check official sources before you go.
