The Kulturlandweg is a marked loop of about 10 km that starts and ends at Hennef station, with the Wanderparkplatz Siegdamm as an alternative start for drivers. It is rated moderate and leads from the Sieg valley up into fields, hedges and villages and back down, which takes about 3–3.5 hours of walking, or 4–5 hours with breaks. It is the easiest proper hike in Hennef to do without a car, and our Hennef Day Routes include a route built around it, in German, English or Spanish.
Many of Hennef's trails start at a car park in the hills. The Kulturlandweg starts at the platform. You step off the RE 9, S 12 or S 19, walk a few minutes, and you are on the route. You also finish at the station, so you can check the next train while you take your boots off.
The name means "cultural landscape trail". The point is the landscape people have shaped: fields, orchards, hedgerows, farm tracks and village edges, with the river below. It is not a forest hike and not a sightseeing tour. If you want a castle, walk the Burgweg at Stadt Blankenberg instead. If you want to understand how the countryside around Hennef works, this is the one.
Walk the direction the official description recommends. Signs are usually set up for that direction, which makes it easier to follow.
In spring and early summer, the fields and orchards are at their best. Autumn brings clear views on cool days. In November and December, daylight is short: sunset is around 16:30 in the Rhineland, so start by 10:00 at the latest and plan to be back by mid-afternoon. Paths are often wet and leaves hide holes.
Field paths can be closed or diverted during harvest or forestry work. Follow the signs on the ground, even if your app says otherwise.
If the weather turns or you feel tired halfway, use the road network to get back down to the valley and the station; ask locals for the shortest way. On a very wet day, swap the Kulturlandweg for the flat walk from the station to the Allner See, which stays on wider paths.
Because the Kulturlandweg begins and ends in the centre, it is easy to build a full day around it. Before the walk, look at the Chronos scale story on a few boards of the Waagenwanderweg near the station. After the walk, rest in the Kurpark in Geistingen or walk down to the Sieg. If you stay overnight, the next day can take you up to Stadt Blankenberg or to Bödingen, so you see both the valley and the heights.
Walking with a dog? Keep it on a lead near grazing animals and in fields, and take bags with you.
About 10 km as a loop, starting and ending at Hennef station or the Wanderparkplatz Siegdamm. Plan 3–3.5 hours of walking, more with breaks.
Yes. It starts at Hennef station, served by the RE 9 and the S-Bahn lines S 12 and S 19. Check current timetables before you travel.
It is rated moderate. Expect some climbs between the valley and the heights and muddy field paths after rain, but no technical sections.
The Hennef Day Routes include the Kulturlandweg with breaks and a bad-weather swap, and the Getting Around Hennef by Bus & Train guide helps with connections. For the train ride, take Was die Sieg weiterträgt, a novel set in Hennef, in German, English or Spanish. All titles are in the Hennef travel guides collection.
Distances, times and connections are planning estimates. Check the official route description and current timetables before you go.
