Where is the Christmas market in Bernkastel-Kues?
The market takes place on the Bernkastel side of the Moselle. The names to use when planning are the historic market square, the surrounding streets and Karlsbader Platz. They are parts of one old-town market, not separate markets.
Historic market square
The heart of the market and the place of the Advent calendar window opening. Come in daylight first to see the timber-framed facades, then stay for the lights. Agree on a meeting point at the edge of the square, because the lanes around it fill up in the late afternoon and on Saturdays.
Karlsbader Platz
This square is the reference point for the entertainment programme. The children's winter cinema is announced here for 20 November at 17:00, and the organiser lists the winter stage on Thursdays at 18:00. Check the current daily programme for your date, as the organiser's website also contains older programme sections.
Kues: culture, not a second market
Kues lies on the opposite bank. The Cusanusstift at Cusanusstraße 2 and the Cusanus birthplace museum at Nikolausufer 49 are cultural stops with their own opening hours. They make a good addition to a market day, but there are no extra Christmas market stalls to look for there.
What are the opening times of the Bernkastel-Kues Christmas market?
Stall hours depend on the day of the week. Events such as the Advent calendar and the stage programme follow their own times, so an open market does not mean that every activity is already running.
Sunday to Thursday, 11:00 to 19:00
On these days the stalls close at 19:00. Leave enough time before closing for shopping or a meal. A weekday visit suits travellers who mainly want to see the stalls and the old town without a special event, and from 1 December you can still catch the 17:30 window opening.
Friday and Saturday, 11:00 to 21:00
The longer evenings work well if your return transport allows it. A market closing time of 21:00 says nothing about the last bus, so check your connection home in the VRT planner before you plan a late stroll. On 5 and 19 December the evening events shape the whole day.
Short-notice changes
The published hours are subject to change. On your travel day, open the tourist office's Christmas market page for last-minute updates, and check the individual page of any special event you plan around. The guide lists these sources at the end.
What is there to eat and buy at the Bernkastel-Kues Christmas market?
The official description gives an idea of the range. It is a guide to what to expect, not a promise of a particular product at every stall.
Riesling mulled wine
Riesling mulled wine is part of the market's regional character. Ask which wine is used, how sweet the drink is and which spices go into it, since recipes differ between stalls. Ask about alcohol-free drinks too, and include the mug deposit in your cash plan.
Tarte flambée, stews, waffles, crêpes
The market overview mentions these among its offerings. Make a meal a separate, seated stop and then choose snacks by appetite. If ingredients matter to you, ask the individual seller, because the same dish can be made in different ways.
Crafts, jewellery, candles
The official description mentions crafts, jewellery, candles and gift ideas. Ask about materials, origins and care before you buy. Being sold at a Moselle market does not automatically mean an item was made there, and fragile goods are easier to carry home when packed well.

The market opens on Friday 20 November 2026 and ends on Sunday 20 December 2026. On the opening day, a children's winter cinema is announced for 17:00 on Karlsbader Platz. Note that the market is closed on Sunday 22 November, the first Sunday of the season, so plan your first weekend around the Friday and Saturday.
Is the Bernkastel-Kues Christmas market open on Sundays?
Yes, except on Sunday 22 November, when it is closed. On the other Sundays of the season the published stall hours are 11:00 to 19:00, the same as Monday to Thursday. Keep in mind that the Cusanus birthplace museum in Kues is normally closed on Sundays and Mondays if you want to combine the market with a museum.

No. The stalls are announced only until 20 December. The Advent calendar on the historic market square continues until 24 December, with the window opening at 11:00 on Christmas Eve. A visit between 21 and 24 December can be a pleasant town walk, but you should not expect open market stalls.
Are there several Christmas markets in Bernkastel-Kues?
There is one Christmas market in Bernkastel's old town, spread over the historic market square, the surrounding streets and Karlsbader Platz. Moving between these areas does not mean visiting another market. Across the Moselle in Kues you will find cultural stops such as the Cusanus birthplace museum and the Cusanusstift, but no additional market.
What time is the Advent calendar in Bernkastel-Kues?
The tourist office gives 17:30 for the window opening from 1 to 23 December and 11:00 on 24 December. It takes place on the historic market square and is a short, timed occasion. Plan the rest of your stroll around it and check the time again on the day, as it is a separate event from the market.
