When it rains in Erfurt, start with an indoor attraction that is definitely open and move the market visit to a drier window. The Augustinian monastery and the Small Synagogue are the most useful indoor stops, while the Old Synagogue is closed throughout Advent 2026. On the market itself, keep to one area, ideally Domplatz, rather than walking to every square. Our page on the Erfurt Christmas market in the rain has a ready-made plan B.

Indoor stops that are open in Advent

Choose an indoor visit for its subject and opening hours, not only as somewhere to warm up. The guide describes these options:

  • Augustinian monastery, audio-guide visit: €8.50 for adults, with a QR-code audio guide in German, English and Korean. General hours are Monday to Friday 10:00 to 16:00, Saturday 11:00 to 14:00, and Sundays and public holidays 11:00 to 12:30. Christmas and New Year arrangements may differ.
  • Monastery Advent tour “Wenn Weihnachten leuchtet…”: on 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, 17 and 22 December at 16:30, about 90 minutes, €22 per person, with a light installation and seasonal tastings.
  • Small Synagogue: free admission, Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Mondays. The venue page gives 10:00 to 18:00, a tourism page gives 11:00 as the opening time, so plan your visit after 11:00.
  • Petersberg, Kommandantenhaus: the official website describes an accessible exhibition. Check current hours and admission before combining it with anything else on the hill.

The Old Synagogue is not an option this winter. It is closed for renovation from 3 August 2026 until provisionally 28 February 2027, and the Erfurt Treasure cannot be seen.

Which parts of the market help in bad weather

Almost everything is outdoors, so it helps to know what not to rely on.

  • Domplatz: suits a concentrated circuit. On a Friday or Saturday it stays open until 22:00, which gives you more chance to wait out a shower.
  • Craft courtyard at Fischmarkt 13/17: open only on 3–6 and 10–13 December from noon. A courtyard is not automatically covered, and the announcement does not promise protection from the weather.
  • Krämerbrücke: the shops along the bridge are a fine stop, but the walk itself is not a dry indoor stay.
  • Winterberg: the ice rink on Petersberg is outdoors. Even if it is open, wind and rain may not suit the visit you had in mind.

A better order for a wet day

Plan the day around your break rather than around the number of squares. A simple version for a weekday looks like this:

  1. Morning: the monastery's audio-guide visit, which opens at 10:00 on weekdays.
  2. Late morning: the Small Synagogue, after 11:00 (not on a Monday).
  3. Lunch: a proper, seated indoor meal.
  4. Afternoon: Domplatz in the driest window you can find.
  5. Evening: an earlier return, or the 16:30 Advent tour if your date matches.

Trams help to keep the walks short. Check the stop nearest to where you actually want to go; getting off at Anger is not the same as getting off near your destination.

What to wear and pack

December days are short and damp air feels colder than the thermometer suggests. A waterproof layer, a warm hat and shoes with good grip matter more than anything else. Paving and the cable ramps on Domplatz may be slippery when wet. Bring a spare pair of gloves and a bag for gifts that should stay dry, and save your return connection on your phone before you set off.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Erfurt Christmas market open when it rains?

The published hours apply to the whole season, and the guide mentions no weather closures. What changes is how long you will want to stay outside. Check current organiser information if the weather is severe.

Is there anything to do on a rainy Monday?

Yes, but choose carefully. The Small Synagogue is closed on Mondays. The Augustinian monastery's general weekday hours are 10:00 to 16:00, so it is the more reliable indoor stop that day.

The full rainy-day route and the culture chapter are in the Erfurt Christmas Markets 2026 guide (PDF). For other cities, see our Christmas market guides.
