Is Seoul a good fit for your trip?
Yes, if you like cities you can take in district by district: royal palaces and tea rooms around Jongno, working markets such as Gwangjang and Mangwon, and long river parks on the Han. For a first visit, three days is a sensible starting point, with one area cluster per day. The metro reaches most of what you will want to see, but station exits, stairs and hills make walking time real. Plan each day around a few metro journeys and a proper lunch, not a list of sights.

Where should you stay in Seoul?
Pick the part of the city you want to come back to each evening, then check the walk from the exact station exit to the hotel door. In Seoul, stairs, hills and large interchanges can matter more than the distance on the map.
For palaces, galleries and tea
Stay here if Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Bukchon and Insadong are the centre of your trip. You can start the morning on foot and come back for a rest without crossing the city. Large roads and quiet lanes sit side by side, so check which station and entrance you will actually use. A room near a useful station is usually more practical than one described as near a palace.
For easy evenings on a first visit
A convenient central base with shopping, food and quick links to several districts. A hotel above a busy shopping street may be louder than its photos suggest, so check the room position and street. Compare the walk from Myeongdong and Euljiro stations with luggage. It suits you if you want simple dinners close by after long sightseeing days.
For cafés, small shops and late nights
Hongik University station has a direct airport rail connection, and the area around it is full of cafés and independent shops. A quieter side street in Yeonnam can suit couples, while the busiest nightlife streets suit late sleepers. The neighbourhood stretches far beyond the station, so plot the real walk with luggage. Ask about sound insulation before booking.
Our suggestion: for a first trip centred on palaces and old Seoul, compare Jongno / Insadong with Myeongdong. Choose Hongdae if cafés and evenings out matter most, Gangnam only if your plans keep taking you south of the Han, Seongsu if you prefer converted warehouses and Seoul Forest, and Seoul Station when airport rail and intercity trains shape the trip. These are planning preferences, not a ranking of hotels.
A flexible three-day Seoul itinerary
An outline built from three of the ten routes in our itinerary guide. Walking times between stops are realistic, not rushed. Check palace closing days, Bukchon visitor hours and any ticketed visit before you fix a date.
Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon & Insadong
Give Gyeongbokgung Palace the whole morning. Walk the courtyards slowly and look at the painted eaves rather than racing from gate to gate. From there it is roughly a 25–40 minute walk to Bukchon Hanok Village, a residential area where you keep voices low and stay within the permitted visitor hours.
Have a proper lunch before Insadong, where craft shops, galleries and a tea room set a slower pace. Finish with a quiet visit to Jogyesa Temple, a short walk away. If Bukchon does not suit the day, spend longer in Insadong instead.
Seoul Forest, Seongsu & Gwangjang Market
Start with a slow walk in Seoul Forest, then take lunch and browse the cafés and converted industrial buildings of Seongsu nearby. Save one or two places you care about and leave the rest to what looks good on the day.
In the afternoon take the metro west to Dongdaemun Design Plaza and walk around its curved exterior before deciding on an exhibition. End with an early dinner at Gwangjang Market after a first walk through to compare portions and prices. If Seongsu takes the whole day, keep Dongdaemun for another date.
Mapo at an easy pace & the Han River
Begin around Hongik University station and the streets of Hongdae, then go to Mangwon Market for a neighbourhood lunch. Buy a manageable amount and ask where you can eat it.
Head back towards Hongdae for a café break rather than adding another shopping district. If you still want an open horizon, continue to Yeouido Hangang Park for a riverside walk. In wind or rain, stay in Hongdae and keep the evening simple.
How do you get to and around Seoul?
Save the route to your exact hotel before you fly: station name, line, direction and exit number. The right exit can matter as much as the right train.
From Incheon or Gimpo Airport
At Incheon, check your terminal first. The AREX Express runs to Seoul Station, while the all-stop train serves stations such as Hongik University, the easier option for Hongdae. For Myeongdong, compare Seoul Station plus a metro connection with an airport bus serving the area. Our editorial planning window from Incheon arrivals to the hotel door is 90–150 minutes, not counting immigration and baggage. Gimpo is a separate airport and needs its own saved route. After a late landing, check the last connection for the whole journey, or use an official taxi or a pickup with a written total.
Getting around the city
Build each day around a small number of metro journeys. Tmoney is a practical stored-value card, but check how you can buy and recharge it with your payment method before relying on a foreign card. The Seoul government lists an adult base subway fare of KRW 1,550 with a transport card from 28 June 2025; distance and special-line supplements can apply, so check the official fare page before travel. For walking, compare Naver Map or KakaoMap with the station signs, and keep your hotel name and address in Korean offline.
When is a good time to visit Seoul?
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for long walks, but the popular blossom and foliage weeks also bring crowds. Summer heat and heavy rain can change a day quickly, and winter calls for warm layers and shorter outdoor stretches. Treat seasonal photos as inspiration, not a promise for your dates. Pair each outdoor day with an indoor option in the same part of town, such as the National Museum of Korea on a wet or very hot day.

How many days do you need in Seoul?
Three days is a good start for a first visit: one for the palaces and Insadong, one for Seongsu and a market, one for Mapo and the river. Five days give a relaxed pace, and seven leave room for returning to a favourite district. Plan one area cluster per day to keep metro journeys short.
Where is the best area to stay in Seoul for a first visit?
