With children, plan the Quedlinburg Christmas market around one fixed point and a few short circuits. The Living Advent Calendar meets at Finkenherd 1/2 at 16:30 every day from 1 to 23 December, and on 24 December at 13:00. Add one courtyard or Marktplatz, a warm seated lunch and an agreed meeting point, and the day stays manageable. The Quedlinburg Christmas Markets 2026 guide includes a full family route for a courtyard Sunday.

The Living Advent Calendar

The Living Advent Calendar starts at a shared meeting point at Finkenherd. From there, participants walk together to a different house each day. For families this creates a clear sequence: arrive in time, walk together, then add a short circuit of your own or head home.

  • 1–23 December: departure at 16:30 from Finkenherd 1/2.
  • 24 December: departure at 13:00.
  • Duration: the guide has no confirmed finishing time, so avoid a tight connection afterwards.

It is a fixed departure rather than a flexible drop-in window. Do not assume you can join later if you arrive after the group has left. Check current arrangements before you travel.

Preparing children for the walk

Plan waiting time around your children's ages. A snack beforehand, warm hands and an agreed meeting point in case anyone gets separated often help more than an extra circuit. Children can look out for interesting doors and windows on the way, while understanding that private houses outside the event are not open to visitors.

A simple theme can keep younger visitors interested: count gateways, look for handmade stars or compare the shapes of windows. It gives the walk a thread without adding distance.

A courtyard Sunday with children

The guide's family route is designed for 6 and 13 December, when the courtyards are open and the Advent Calendar has started:

  1. 11:00, one courtyard: choose a manageable destination from the official plan and talk about what you want to look for, such as doors, stars or a particular craft.
  2. 12:00, lunch: a warm seated break with enough time to eat. Check high chairs, access and reservations directly with the venue.
  3. 13:30, a short second circuit: one more courtyard or Marktplatz is enough. Decide by mood and weather.
  4. 15:30, pause: head towards Finkenherd in good time and allow for waiting, toilets and a snack.
  5. 16:30, the calendar departure: join the group at Finkenherd 1/2.

On the first courtyard Sunday, 29 November, the December calendar has not begun yet. On that day, finish with a short market stop or head home earlier.

At the market with children

Start with a slow circuit before choosing food or purchases, and agree on a clear meeting point at the edge of the square. Among similar lights and many visitors, an individual stall is not a reliable landmark. A portion that is easy to share is often more practical than several dishes cooling down at once.

For drinks, ask about an alcohol-free option if the menu is unclear. The word punch on its own does not tell you the alcohol content. If you want a craft activity, such as decorating a bauble at Wordspeicher, ask about start time, duration, price, minimum age and collection time before you commit.

Bad Suderode on 28 November

The Grubenlichtermarkt in Bad Suderode's Kurpark, 14:00–20:00, includes a miners' parade, which the official leaflet starts at 17:00. With children, choose a manageable circuit, agree a viewing place where the group can stay together and ask locally about the parade route. Plan it as a separate excursion.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Advent Calendar suitable for small children?

It can be, as long as you plan for waiting time and warm clothing. Because the finishing time is not confirmed, keep the rest of the evening open.

Is a pushchair practical in Quedlinburg?

In the lower town it can work, but courtyard entrances and the approach to Stiftsberg vary. Ask about entrances and thresholds where it matters.

What should we bring?

Shoes with good grip, several layers, spare clothing and a small snack for the children, plus a charged phone with the meeting point saved.

Family days, a rainy-day route and packing lists are all in the Quedlinburg Christmas market guide (PDF). For bad weather, see also what to do in Quedlinburg when it rains.
