The Bernkastel-Kues Christmas market 2026 is announced from Friday 20 November to Sunday 20 December in Bernkastel's historic old town. It is closed on Sunday 22 November. Stalls open at 11:00 and close at 19:00 from Sunday to Thursday and at 21:00 on Friday and Saturday. For a compact overview of all dates, see our page on the Bernkastel-Kues Christmas market 2026.

The season at a glance

The market season is short and clearly framed. It opens on a Friday and ends on a Sunday four weeks later. One date stands out: the first Sunday, 22 November, is an explicitly published closure. If an automatically generated calendar entry suggests otherwise, the published closure takes priority. Plan your first weekend around the Friday and Saturday instead.

  • Season: 20 November to 20 December 2026
  • Closed: Sunday 22 November
  • Sunday to Thursday: 11:00 to 19:00
  • Friday and Saturday: 11:00 to 21:00

The hours are the published stall hours and remain subject to short-notice changes. On the day of your visit, open the tourist office's Christmas market page to check for updates.

Where the market takes place

The stalls are spread through Bernkastel's old town. The names to use when planning are the historic market square, the surrounding streets and Karlsbader Platz. These are areas of one market, so moving between them does not mean visiting another Christmas market. Kues, on the opposite bank of the Moselle, has cultural stops such as the Cusanus birthplace museum and the Cusanusstift, but no extra market stalls.

The old town is compact. That makes it easy to explore one area in depth instead of rushing from lane to lane. Agree on a meeting point at the edge of the historic market square, especially on Saturday evenings.

Events with their own times

An open market does not mean that every activity is running. Several events follow their own schedule, and some details had not yet been published at the time of research.

  1. 20 November, 17:00: children's winter cinema with a surprise film on Karlsbader Platz. Another screening for adults is listed for 21 November without a confirmed start time.
  2. Thursdays, 18:00: the organiser lists the winter stage on Karlsbader Platz. Confirm your Thursday in the current daily programme.
  3. 1 to 23 December, 17:30: the Advent calendar window opening on the historic market square. On 24 December it takes place at 11:00.
  4. Saturday 5 December, around 18:00: the torchlight swim, with sports divers arriving on the Bernkastel riverbank below the bridge.
  5. Sunday 6 December, 10:00: the St Nicholas walk, with registration and details still to follow. A visit from St Nicholas at the market is listed for the same day without a time.
  6. Saturday 19 December: Christmas fireworks with music. The exact start time was not yet confirmed.

After 20 December

The Advent calendar continues until Christmas Eve, but the stalls end on 20 December. Visitors arriving between 21 and 24 December can plan a town walk around the window opening. They should not expect an open market. Check restaurants and other destinations individually for those dates.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Bernkastel-Kues Christmas market open on Monday?

Yes. Mondays fall under the Sunday to Thursday hours of 11:00 to 19:00. Bear in mind that the Cusanus birthplace museum in Kues is normally closed on Mondays and Sundays if you want to combine the market with a museum visit.

Which days are open until 21:00?

Friday and Saturday. These longer evenings suit a visit that starts in daylight and ends with the lights, provided your journey home still works after a late stroll.

Does the market close early on event evenings?

The guide gives no different hours for event days. On Saturday 5 and 19 December the normal Saturday hours apply, but the evening event shapes the day, so make important purchases earlier.

Our 50-page Bernkastel-Kues Christmas markets guide (PDF) turns these dates into day plans, with routes for weekdays, Saturdays and the event evenings.
