Where to Stay in Seoul: Six Areas for a First Visit

Jongno, Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam, Seongsu or Seoul Station? Who each Seoul area suits on a first visit, the trade-offs and what to check.

Short answer: for a first visit to Seoul, stay in Jongno or Insadong if palaces and traditional streets are the heart of your trip, or in Myeongdong if you want easy evenings with plenty of food close by. Hongdae suits café and nightlife lovers, Seoul Station suits short stays with lots of rail travel, and Gangnam and Seongsu make sense only when your plans pull you there. Whatever you choose, book near a workable station entrance, not just near a famous name. That one detail shapes every morning of the trip.

Here is how the six areas compare, what each costs you in travel time and the checks worth doing before you pay.

Before you commit, sketch two or three typical days from the hotel door. If each one starts with a long ride back to the historic centre, that tells you more than any room rate.

Jongno and Insadong: the historic centre

This is the area to choose when Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces, galleries and traditional streets are the centre of your trip. You can start the morning on foot, come back for a rest and go out again without crossing the city. Bukchon Hanok Village, Jogyesa Temple and Gwangjang Market are all part of the same broad district.

Big roads and quiet lanes sit very close together here, so look at the hotel's exact entrance rather than the neighbourhood name. A room near a useful station is usually more practical than one described only as "near the palace". Evening atmosphere varies from street to street; check late dining and lift access if they matter to you.

A good test: after an afternoon elsewhere, would a gallery lane, a cup of tea or a simple meal nearby be enough for your evening? If so, this area will suit your routine.

Myeongdong and Seoul Station: central and practical

Myeongdong is a convenient first-visit base for shopping, food and quick access to several central districts. It works well when you want straightforward evenings after full sightseeing days, with many places to eat close at hand, and shopping can stay flexible instead of becoming its own outing. Its energy is part of the appeal, but a hotel above a busy shopping street may not deliver the quiet evening its photos suggest. Compare the walk from Myeongdong and Euljiro stations, including stairs, and check the precise room position if you want quiet.

Seoul Station is the practical choice when airport and intercity trains dominate a short stay. The trade-off is the immediate street environment and the size of the station, which is really several linked facilities. Close in metres can still mean several road crossings. Check the exact exit, reception hours and luggage arrangements, and plan your evenings deliberately rather than expecting a leisure district on the doorstep.

Hongdae and Yeonnam: cafés and late evenings

Stay here for cafés, independent shops and evenings that carry on after the sightseeing is done. Hongik University station has a useful airport rail connection, but the neighbourhood spreads far beyond the station entrances. Mangwon Market, a good neighbourhood food stop, is part of the same Mapo side of the city.

A quieter side street in Yeonnam can suit couples, while a room near the busiest nightlife streets may suit late sleepers better. If you go to bed early, look beyond the busiest blocks and ask about sound insulation. A longer walk to a quiet room can be worth it, as long as it is a route you are comfortable with after dark and with luggage. Do not choose Hongdae for the airport link alone; choose it because you will enjoy the evenings.

Gangnam and Seongsu: when your plans point south or east

Gangnam makes sense when your plans keep taking you south of the Han River, for example to Bongeunsa Temple and the Starfield Library at COEX, not simply because the name is familiar. Large roads, office towers and big station complexes make walks longer than a map thumbnail suggests. For a palace-heavy first trip, the repeated cross-city journeys can outweigh a very good room rate. Compare the metro line serving your hotel with the places you will visit most.

Seongsu suits travellers who like contemporary cafés and converted industrial spaces, and who prefer browsing to rushing between monuments. It pairs naturally with Seoul Forest. Choose the street and station carefully: the area around a well-known café is not automatically convenient after dark or with luggage. On a short first visit, compare one relaxed day here with moving your whole stay away from the historic centre. For many people the day visit is enough.
