Is Koh Samui a good fit for your trip?

Yes, if you want a beach holiday with real choice between lively and quiet bays, plus temples, viewpoints and a boat day to Ang Thong National Marine Park. For a first visit, three days is enough to settle into one base and explore two coasts, and five or more leave room for a weather-dependent excursion. There is no metro, so every beach-to-beach trip is a road journey. The most useful first decision is where you stay, not which excursion you book.

Where should you stay on Koh Samui?

Pick the coast you want to spend your ordinary evenings on. Then ask your host about the actual walk to the beach and to dinner: steep villa roads and patchy pavements can make short distances awkward.

BOPHUT

For a first visit and easy dinners

A strong first choice for evening dining and the atmosphere of Fisherman's Village. Check whether your hotel is genuinely walkable to the village and whether the beach frontage matches your expectations. A hillside address in Bophut can mean a ride every evening. When the walk works, simple local dinners cut down on transfers after days spent elsewhere.

CHAWENG

For a lively beach with many services

Choose Chaweng for a busy beach holiday with shops and restaurants close by. The north, centre and south of the beach feel different, so look at the exact location and read reviews about noise. A central walkable stay and a hillside view are very different products under the same name. If you like staying local, the convenience can save on transport.

LAMAI

For a southern base with its own routine

Lamai is the other large beach base, south of Chaweng. It suits you if you want a local routine with selected outings, such as the southern temples and Hin Ta Hin Yai, rather than nightly trips to the north coast. Compare the section of beach, the walking route and nearby places to eat. Don't judge swimming conditions from hotel photos.

Our suggestion: choose Bophut for a first visit with easy evenings, Chaweng if you want activity at the door, and Lamai for a southern routine. Maenam suits a quieter northern rhythm, Choeng Mon a compact bay near the northeast temples, and Taling Ngam on the west coast a deliberate retreat that is less convenient for trips east. These are planning preferences, not a ranking of hotels.

A flexible three-day Koh Samui itinerary

An outline built from three of the ten routes in our itinerary guide. Road times between stops are editorial estimates for a car or driver. Keep the midday hours lighter, and dress for temple visits even on beach days.

DAY 01

A calm arrival in Bophut

Leave the airport journey out of the plan and start once you have checked in. Walk to Bophut Beach, learn the way to the public access point and get a sense of the water before you decide how much time to spend there.

Rest in the afternoon, then walk the waterfront and side streets of Fisherman's Village before choosing dinner. Confirm any market schedule separately; the village works as an evening without one. If you land late, keep only dinner.

DAY 02

Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem & Choeng Mon

Visit Wat Phra Yai, the Big Buddha temple, before the hottest hours, then drive 10–20 minutes to Wat Plai Laem. Both are places of worship: dress appropriately, follow the footwear signs and allow time for steps and heat.

Continue to Choeng Mon Beach for a long lunch and some beach time, and check swimming conditions locally. Finish back in Bophut for a waterfront walk and dinner, around 20–40 minutes by car. In poor weather, skip the beach and stretch out a sheltered meal.

DAY 03

Lamai, Hin Ta Hin Yai & the southern temples

Start at Lamai Beach and pick one section to enjoy rather than rushing along the whole shore. A short drive takes you to the Hin Ta Hin Yai rock formations; wear shoes with grip and stay away from wave-exposed edges.

Change into respectful clothing before Wat Ratchathammaram and the Guan Yu Shrine in Hua Thanon, each 10–20 minutes further on by car. The drives are short enough to keep a proper lunch. If the rocks or waves make access uncomfortable, leave out Hin Ta Hin Yai.

How do you get to and around Koh Samui?

Check which airport your booking uses before anything else, and save your hotel address in Thai and the pickup contact offline.

Samui Airport or Surat Thani

Samui Airport (USM) is on the island. Surat Thani (URT) is on the mainland and needs a road-and-ferry journey, even if a booking site lists both for the region. At USM, compare the airport transport desk with a hotel pickup and confirm the total price, vehicle, luggage and exact destination. Our editorial road buffers after leaving arrivals are 15–35 minutes to Chaweng or Bophut, 25–45 minutes to Maenam and 35–60 minutes to Lamai; traffic and weather can add more. From Surat Thani, book and check each part of the transfer and leave a generous margin before flights, because ferries depend on sea conditions.

Getting around the island

Agree the fare before any taxi or locally arranged ride and ask whether the price is per vehicle or per person. For several stops, a driver for a half or full day can make sense if waiting time and the return are clear. Don't expect a songthaew to work like a fixed-price city bus on every trip. A scooter is not needed to enjoy Samui and is no improvised solution for inexperienced riders. Group sights by coast and arrange the ride home before you sit down to dinner.

When is a good time to visit Koh Samui?

Samui follows its own Gulf of Thailand weather pattern, so don't copy a Phuket calendar. Heavy rain and rough seas can affect ferry transfers and boat excursions. Check the local forecast and operator notices close to your dates. A dry morning does not guarantee a calm afternoon crossing, so keep an island alternative ready for any boat day.

Worth knowing

Leave a flexible day after an Ang Thong boat trip and before your flight.
Check recent rain before visiting Na Muang Waterfall 1; a view from the path is enough.
Plan temples and viewpoints for the morning and keep midday for shade and lunch.
