A half-day route through Shitennoji, Tennoji Park, Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku, with stations, walking times, yen budgets and a rain plan.
Thoughtful routes, remarkable places and stories for the road. Find a fresh perspective and travel at your own pace.
Skip to the article ↓Shinsekai, Tsutenkaku and Tennoji fit comfortably into one half day: start at Shitennoji temple in the morning or Tennoji Park after lunch, walk to Shinsekai for kushikatsu and the Tsutenkaku tower, and finish at Abeno Harukas if you want a view at dusk. The three areas sit within a 10–20-minute walk of each other, so you need no transport between stops. Below you get stations, walking times, yen budgets and a rain alternative; our Osaka Itineraries help you fit this half day around the main day routes.
Shinsekai means "new world". It was laid out in the early 20th century as an entertainment district, and the area still has a slightly old-fashioned, low-rise feel next to the glass towers around Tennoji station. That contrast is the reason to go.
Three stations work, depending on where you start:
From Namba, the Midosuji Line takes about 5–10 minutes to Dobutsuen-mae or Tennoji. You can also walk from Namba in 25–35 minutes through Nipponbashi (Den Den Town), which is a decent warm-up if the weather is mild.
If you start after lunch instead, reverse the order: Tennoji Park, Shinsekai, Tsutenkaku, and dinner in Shinsekai. Many kushikatsu shops are open from late morning to the evening, so the area works for both meals.
A half day here is one of the cheaper outings in Osaka. As a rough planning range per person:
Plan on ¥4,000–9,000 per person for the full route with lunch. Admission prices change, so check each official site before you go. An IC card such as ICOCA covers the subway legs.
If it rains, keep Shinsekai for lunch and drop the park. Abeno Harukas has a department store, an art museum and the observation deck under one roof, and Tennoji station connects to underground shopping. The view from the tower is weaker in heavy cloud; if visibility is poor, save the ticket for another day.
Yes, for a half day. It shows a different side of Osaka from Namba and Umeda: older, cheaper and more local. Combine it with Tennoji rather than making a special trip just for the tower.
The main streets around Tsutenkaku are busy with diners in the evening and most visitors have no problems. As in any city, keep to lit main streets and use the subway or a taxi back if you are unsure.
For the view, Abeno Harukas is much higher. Tsutenkaku is about the place itself and its history. With limited time and budget, choose Harukas for the view and see Tsutenkaku from the street.
Ten ready-made day routes, from a first evening in Namba to Osaka Castle, Umeda and day trips to Nara and Kyoto, plus 3, 5 and 7-day plans, are in Osaka Itineraries – 10 Day Routes + 3, 5 & 7-Day Plans. Use them to decide which free half day this south-Osaka outing fills. Keep the stops on your phone with the Osaka Offline Map Guide. For the evening, The Mending Room in Osaka is a cozy novel set among the city's neighbourhood lanes and everyday meals, available in English and Spanish.
