Is Hennef a good fit for your trip?

Hennef suits travellers who like to combine a small town with walking, history and river scenery. Its highlights are spread out: the centre and Geistingen around the station, Stadt Blankenberg on a ridge above the Sieg, and villages such as Bödingen and Uckerath on the heights. For a day trip, choose either the centre with the Chronos scale story and the river, or Stadt Blankenberg. With three days, each area gets a day of its own.

Your accommodation decides how easily you reach an early train, a village bus or dinner after an evening event. Start with the days you have planned, then compare the real walk from the station and the connection to your trailheads.

ZENTRUM & GEISTINGEN

For rail trips and short walks

The centre puts Hennef station, shops and places to eat within reach, along with the Kurpark and the older core of Geistingen. It is the easiest base if you want to combine the town, the Sieg and several train excursions without a car. Check the actual walk from the station with luggage, and ask about the room's position and noise.

STADT BLANKENBERG

For castle views and the Burgweg

Staying near the hilltop town suits walkers who want the castle, the small museums and the Burgweg close by. Blankenberg station is not in the historic town, so the climb is part of every arrival and departure. Confirm luggage, parking and evening meals before booking.

UCKERATH & THE VILLAGES

For quiet days on the heights

Uckerath and the villages around Bödingen work well for a walking holiday among orchards and farmland. A village base means planning buses, the Anruf-Sammeltaxi shared taxi or a car in advance, as well as breakfast and dinner. Search with the exact village name, since many places share the Hennef postal address.

Our suggestion: stay in the centre for a first visit that relies on trains, and choose Stadt Blankenberg or a village only when walking days make up most of your trip. The town's accommodation directory is a good place to start; confirm prices and facilities directly when you book.

Hennef in three flexible days, or one day trip

Use this as an outline rather than a timed schedule. Each day covers one area and works as a day trip on its own; for a single visit, choose Day 01 or Day 02. Check current opening hours and trail notices before you set off.

DAY 01

Station, Chronos scale & the Sieg

Start at Hennef station and get your bearings in the centre. Follow a few stations of the Waagen-Wanderweg, the trail about the Chronos automatic scale that Carl Reuther and Eduard Reisert developed and that was approved for official verification in 1883. On Frankfurter Straße, look out for baroque courtyards such as the Proffenhof, and view Meys Fabrik on Beethovenstraße from outside.

After lunch, walk to the Sieg and cross the Horstmannsteg footbridge towards the Allner See. Swimming is allowed, but it is not an official bathing lake and has no lifeguards, so a walk and a long break make a complete visit. Schloss Allner is private; enjoy it from the public paths.

DAY 02

Stadt Blankenberg & the Burgweg

Give the hilltop town a full day. The marked Burgweg starts at the Stein walkers' car park and is about 6 km long, roughly two and a half hours of walking, with a real climb. Arriving by train, plan the walk up from Blankenberg station as a separate stage.

In town, pick one focus: the castle and its view over the valley, the local history museum in the Katharinenturm, or the wine-growing museum in the Runenhaus with its themed trail. The castle has seasonal opening hours and is closed on Mondays, so check before you go. The official Lauschtour audio walk is another way in; download it before you arrive.

DAY 03

Bödingen, Geistingen & the Kurpark

Spend the morning in Bödingen, a village with a pilgrimage church at An der Klostermauer 14. Keep Bödingen and Altenbödingen apart when you look up stops or meeting points. Walkers can add the marked Marienweg, about 7 km and roughly two and a half hours from Driesch or Bödingen.

For a gentler day, choose Geistingen instead: the area around St. Michael, then a slow hour in the Kurpark with its labyrinth and large pond. Families can swap in the Muh und Mäh trail near Lanzenbach, with loops of 3.7 or 5.5 km and bus line 524 from Hennef station.

How do you get to and around Hennef?

Plan the whole journey to your accommodation or trailhead. In Hennef, the name of a station and the place you want to visit are often two different things.

Arriving by train or plane

Hennef station is served by the RE 9 regional express and the S 12 and S 19 S-Bahn lines. Check the journey planner for your exact travel date, since engineering works and replacement buses can change the timetable. Hennef im Siegbogen may suit some addresses better, and Blankenberg station sits down in the valley, not in the historic town. Buses, shared taxis and cars

Buses link the centre with the villages; plan the outward and return trips together and check the walk from the stop. The Anruf-Sammeltaxi shared taxi runs on published routes and must be booked at least 60 minutes before the scheduled departure, by phone on 02241 499 999 or online via RSVG. By car, park once per outing at signposted car parks and continue on foot; parking at the family trail near Lanzenbach is limited, so the town recommends the bus.

When is a good time to go to Hennef?

Each season changes what works best. In spring, the orchard landscape and the countryside around Bödingen look quite different from high summer, although blossom dates vary from year to year. In summer, head up to the heights early or late in the day, and treat a swim in the Allner See as a separate decision. Autumn suits the Streuobstweg orchard trail and forest walks such as the Holzweg, while winter favours the centre, Geistingen and an evening at the Kur-Theater, with shorter walks outdoors.

Worth knowing

Check the Naturregion Sieg trail notices before any marked walk.
Look up your return bus before a village walk; long daylight does not mean later buses.
Wear shoes with good grip for the cobbles and climbs in Stadt Blankenberg.
