Is Byron Bay a good fit for your trip?
Yes, if you want a coastal holiday that can be walked for much of the time, with the option of a few days inland. The town centre, Main Beach and the headland walk to Cape Byron Lighthouse are close together, while Bangalow, Newrybar, Brunswick Heads and Lennox Head need a car or booked transport. Decide early whether you want a beach stay or a wider Northern Rivers trip, because that choice shapes your base, transport and budget more than any attraction list. For a first visit, a central base and one or two regional days are a good balance.

Where should you stay in Byron Bay?
Six areas work as bases, and they differ more than the shared Byron Bay label suggests. Picture the evening walk back to your room before you book. These three cover most first trips.
For a first visit without a car
Meals, shops and Main Beach are all close, so you can return to your room between outings and choose dinner without another journey. Check the exact room position: a room one street back can feel very different from one above a venue. If you still plan to hire a car, add the full parking cost to the comparison. This base is strongest when you want the option of doing less.
For a quieter coastal setting
Belongil and North Beach are calmer than the centre and close to Habitat and the Arts and Industry area. The trade-off is a longer approach to central restaurants, so check the actual walking route and its lighting at night. The Byron Bay Train can help on some days, but confirm its timetable rather than relying on a hotel description. This base suits a stay spent mostly locally, with planned trips into town.
For village life and countryside
Choose this area when time inland is part of the holiday itself: Bangalow's main street, Newrybar and the farms around them. A room in the village centre and an isolated rural property are very different stays, so ask about the final road, nearby dining and arriving after dark. You will need a car or booked transport. If every day starts at the beach, add up the driving before deciding.
Our suggestion: stay in the town centre for a first visit and add a hinterland day by car or tour. Wategos suits a small-beach setting below the headland, with slopes and limited parking as the trade-off. Suffolk Park is a residential base south of town, and Brunswick Heads to the north is a small town with its own riverside character rather than a stand-in for Byron. These are planning preferences, not a ranking of hotels.
A flexible three-day Byron Bay itinerary
Use this as an outline from a central base. Walking and driving times are editorial planning buffers. Check park alerts, surf conditions and restaurant bookings before each day.
The headland on foot
Start at Main Beach and follow the coast to The Pass, about 35–55 minutes on foot, giving surfers space. Continue to Wategos Beach for a pause; parking and beach conditions vary, so do not plan the day around a swim.
In the afternoon, climb to Cape Byron Lighthouse, allowing 35–55 minutes uphill with steps and exposure. The full Walgun Cape Byron Walking Track is a 3.7 km loop and a separate choice from this route. If heat, mobility or a park alert rule out the headland, walk from Main Beach to Clarkes Beach and back instead.
The Farm, Bangalow and Newrybar
Drive to The Farm at Ewingsdale and reserve lunch there in advance if it matters to your day, for example at Three Blue Ducks. Leave time to look around the property where visitor access is permitted.
Continue 20–35 minutes by car to Bangalow and walk the village slowly, with time for shops and a coffee. Newrybar is 15–25 minutes away if you prefer a booked dinner in a smaller village. Check market and restaurant days, and plan a sober driver or booked transport for the return.
North Beach or Brunswick Heads
Stay local with a North Beach day: browse Habitat and the Arts and Industry area, then walk to Belongil Beach. Use the Byron Bay Train only if its timetable matches your plan on the day.
If you have a car, drive 25–45 minutes north to Brunswick Heads instead. Walk the town and riverside, eat locally and come back without adding a string of beaches. Swimming is a separate decision based on current conditions.
How do you get to and around Byron Bay?
Plan the door-to-door journey to your exact address first. The flight fare is only part of the cost: shuttle availability, luggage and arrival time matter just as much.
From Ballina (BNK) or Gold Coast (OOL)
Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is the closest commonly used airport; Gold Coast Airport lies farther north. As a planning window after leaving arrivals, allow about 35–60 minutes from Ballina and 60–100 minutes from the Gold Coast, more with traffic or shared-shuttle stops. Book the shuttle or pickup with the operator and confirm that it reaches your property. During NSW daylight saving, Queensland and New South Wales can show different local times, so check the time zone on your booking and pickup message.
In town and beyond
Central Byron can be explored mostly on foot. For the hinterland and neighbouring towns, a hire car helps if you are comfortable driving, while a booked tour or driver removes parking and navigation. Do not assume a local bus reaches a remote property or a late dinner. The Byron Bay Train is a short local line between town and North Beach, not an airport link, and beach parking is limited and regulated, so read the signs on site.
When is a good time to go to Byron Bay?
Byron Bay is a coastal destination, but it still needs a weather plan. Heat, storms, surf and strong wind can change what is sensible outdoors on any given day. Check NSW National Parks alerts before a headland or rainforest walk, and use current lifeguard advice before swimming. Whale watching is seasonal and sightings are never guaranteed. When the sea is best watched from land, a café, a gallery and a long lunch make a perfectly good day.
