Subway or bus to Suwon, a 2–3-hour walk around the Hwaseong wall, Haenggung palace, galbi and chicken street, and a rain plan.
Thoughtful routes, remarkable places and stories for the road. Find a fresh perspective and travel at your own pace.
Skip to the article ↓Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is an easy day trip from Seoul: the subway or an express bus gets you there in about 1–1.5 hours, and the walk around the 5.7-km fortress wall takes 2–3 hours. Add Hwaseong Haenggung palace and a galbi lunch and you have a full, unhurried day. To see how Suwon fits between your Seoul days, the Seoul Itineraries lay out day routes with realistic travel times.
Hwaseong was built in 1794–1796 under King Jeongjo, partly to honour his father, Crown Prince Sado. It combined Korean and Western-influenced building methods of the time and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Much of what you see today was restored from detailed construction records after damage in the 20th century.
Most people walk clockwise or anticlockwise from Paldalmun, the south gate. This route starts there and keeps the steepest climb for the beginning, when your legs are fresh:
The full loop is mostly paved paths and steps. Allow 2–3 hours with stops. If you only want a sample, walk Janganmun to Hwahongmun along the flatter northern section (30–45 minutes).
Haenggung was the king's temporary palace when he visited Suwon. It is smaller than the Seoul palaces, and that is part of its appeal: you can see it in 45–60 minutes. On some days there are performances or guard ceremonies in the forecourt. The fortress wall section has its own small fee, and the palace has a separate ticket, both usually a few thousand won. Check current fees and closing times on the Suwon cultural foundation website.
The Hwaseong Eocha, a small tourist trolley, runs between Paldalmun area and Yeonmudae on a fixed schedule. It is useful if you have limited mobility or young children. Seats are limited at weekends, so buy the ticket early in the day.
Suwon is known across Korea for galbi, marinated beef short ribs grilled at the table. Large galbi restaurants cluster around the fortress and in the city centre. A beef galbi meal is not cheap: plan roughly ₩40,000–70,000 per person. Pork galbi and lunch sets cost less.
The other local speciality is fried chicken. Suwon's Tongdak Street (chicken alley) near Paldalmun has several old chicken restaurants that cook whole chickens in large pots. A whole chicken for two or three people costs roughly ₩20,000–30,000.
The Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival usually takes place in early autumn with a royal procession re-enactment. Dates change each year; look them up if you want to see it or avoid it.
If it rains heavily, skip the climb to Seojangdae (the steps get slippery) and focus on Haenggung, the Suwon Hwaseong Museum near Hwahongmun, and the cafes of Haenggung-dong. You can still walk the short northern wall section under an umbrella.
Yes, if you like walking and history. It is the only place near Seoul where you can walk the full length of a historic city wall with gates, towers and command posts in one go.
Half a day for the wall walk and Haenggung. A full day if you add a galbi lunch, the museum and the cafe streets.
Yes. Subway Line 1, the Suin-Bundang Line, red express buses and Suwon's local buses all take T-money.
The Seoul Itineraries – 10 Day Routes + 3, 5 & 7-Day Plans help you decide which day to give to Suwon and what to pair it with. For subway lines, T-money and app tips, see the Seoul Travel Confidence Kit. Both are available in English, Spanish and German.
