Penang International Airport (PEN) is at Bayan Lepas in the south of the island, about 16–20 km from George Town. A Grab or taxi takes roughly 30–50 minutes depending on traffic, and the Rapid Penang public bus takes about 60–90 minutes for a few ringgit. With luggage after a long flight, most people take a Grab; on a budget and with light bags, the bus works well. Our Penang Airport to Hotel Guide covers the arrival step by step; note that our Penang guides are available in English, Spanish and German.

Your three options at a glance

  • Grab (ride-hailing app). About 30–50 minutes to George Town. As a rough range, expect RM 25–50, more at night or when demand is high. You see the price before you book.
  • Airport taxi. Fixed-price coupons are sold at a counter in the arrivals hall. Same journey time as Grab, usually a little more expensive. Useful if your phone has no data yet.
  • Rapid Penang bus. Routes such as the 401 and 401E link the airport with George Town, ending around the Weld Quay jetty area. About 60–90 minutes, fares of a few ringgit. Buses run from early morning to late evening, with gaps of 30–60 minutes at quieter times.

Route numbers and timetables change. Check the current Rapid Penang route list before you fly, and confirm the bus stop sign at the airport.

Before you leave the terminal, take some ringgit from an ATM in the arrivals area. Cards are widely accepted in George Town hotels and cafés, but hawker stalls, small shops and some buses still prefer cash. RM 100–200 is a reasonable amount for the first two days.

Grab from Penang Airport: how it works

Grab is the most common way to get from the airport to your hotel. You need the app installed, a payment method or cash option set, and mobile data or the airport Wi-Fi.

  1. Clear immigration and customs. Arrival formalities for foreign visitors can take anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour on busy evenings.
  2. Buy a local SIM or eSIM if you want data for the whole trip. Counters in the arrivals hall sell tourist SIMs; prices and packages vary.
  3. Open Grab, enter your hotel name and check the pickup point the app shows. The airport has a marked pickup area; follow the signs rather than waiting at the kerb outside the doors.
  4. Check the plate number before you get in.

Hotels in George Town's heritage core sit on narrow one-way streets. If your guesthouse is on a small lane such as Love Lane or one of the side streets off Armenian Street, the driver may stop at the corner. That is normal.

The bus option in more detail

The bus is slower because it stops often and winds through Bayan Lepas and the southern suburbs before running up the east coast into George Town. It makes sense if you arrive in daylight, travel light and stay near the bus line: around Komtar, Lebuh Chulia, or close to the jetty.

  • Have small notes and coins. Drivers may not give change for large notes. Some buses also accept contactless cards; check what is current.
  • Tell the driver or check the map on your phone for your stop. Stops are announced on some buses but not all.
  • Rush hour on weekday mornings and late afternoons can add 20–30 minutes.

If you are staying in Batu Ferringhi on the north coast, check for a direct route from the airport. Otherwise take the bus to George Town and change, or take a Grab for about 45–75 minutes and a higher fare.

Arriving late at night

Buses thin out in the late evening. After that, Grab and airport taxis are the realistic options. Grab cars are usually available late, though waits can be longer and prices higher. If your flight lands after about 22:00, keep the hotel's phone number handy and send your arrival time in advance, especially to small guesthouses with limited reception hours. Some ask you to collect keys from a lockbox.

Plan B if something goes wrong

  • No data, no Wi-Fi. Use the taxi coupon counter. It is the simplest fallback.
  • Grab shows no cars. Wait 5–10 minutes and try again, or switch to the taxi counter.
  • Heavy rain. Penang's afternoon storms can slow traffic. Add 15–30 minutes to any plan.
  • You landed in Kuala Lumpur instead. From KL you can fly to Penang (about 1 hour) or take the ETS train to Butterworth (roughly 4–4.5 hours) and the ferry across to George Town.
