How to get around Koh Samui: the ring road, taxi and songthaew prices, Grab, scooter licence rules and how each beach area works.
Thoughtful routes, remarkable places and stories for the road. Find a fresh perspective and travel at your own pace.
Skip to the article ↓Most visitors get around Koh Samui with a mix of taxis or ride-hailing for longer trips, shared songthaews on the ring road for cheap short hops, and walking within their own beach area. Renting a scooter is common but only sensible if you hold the right licence, are an experienced rider and have insurance that covers it. Our Koh Samui Travel Confidence Kit covers the options and what to do when things go wrong.
The island is roughly 25 km across. One main road, Route 4169, runs right round it in a loop of about 50 km, and most beaches, villages and hotels sit on or just off it. That makes Samui easy to understand: almost every trip is "along the ring road, then down a side road".
Traffic is light at night and slow around Chaweng and the airport in the afternoon. As a planning range by car:
Scooter crashes are a frequent cause of injuries among visitors on Samui. The ring road has fast traffic, sand on corners, steep hills near Lamai and Chaweng Noi, and sudden rain.
If you have never ridden a scooter, Samui is not the place to learn.
Songthaews run less after dark and taxi prices rise. If you are out late in Chaweng and staying elsewhere, arrange the ride back in advance through your hotel or check app availability before you go. Keep your hotel's name and address written in Thai on your phone; it helps drivers who do not read English.
If a price seems far too high, politely decline and try the next taxi or the app. If there is a dispute about damage on a rental, your photos are your strongest evidence.
Not in the sense of timetabled buses. Songthaews run along the ring road and act as shared taxis. For anything off the main road, use a taxi, the app or your own transport.
Yes, Grab operates on the island, though car availability varies by area and time. Have a taxi number from your hotel as a backup.
Not if you stay in Chaweng, Lamai or Bophut and plan a few outings by taxi. A car makes more sense for families, longer stays or a base on the quieter west coast.
Getting-around options and fixes for common travel problems are in the Koh Samui Travel Confidence Kit – Getting Around & Problem Solvers. To pick a base that keeps transfers short, read Where to Stay in Koh Samui. All guides are in Koh Samui Travel Guides.
Times and prices are planning estimates, not timetables or fixed fares. Check current prices, licence rules and your insurance before you travel.
