With two days in Huế, spend the first on the Imperial City and the Citadel, and the second on the royal tombs with a stop at Thiên Mụ Pagoda. A third day gives you time for a Perfume River boat trip, a slow food day, or a late-afternoon trip to the Tam Giang lagoon, about 30–45 minutes from the centre. In the rainy season, use the third day as a buffer. Our Huế Itineraries contain ready-made day routes for the city and its surroundings; the Huế guides are available in English, Spanish and German.
As a rough range, a car with driver for this day costs VND 600,000–1,200,000. Combination tickets for the Imperial City and the tombs save money if you visit all of them; check the current options on the official Huế Monuments Conservation Centre website.
Option A, slow morning on the river: a dragon boat from the south bank landing upstream towards Thiên Mụ and the Hòn Chén temple, then a lunch of cơm hến and an afternoon of chè and coffee.
Option B, Tam Giang lagoon: the Tam Giang–Cầu Hai lagoon system north and east of Huế is one of the largest in Southeast Asia. Fishing villages, bamboo fish traps and wide flat water. The common plan is a late-afternoon trip with a car or motorbike tour to a lagoon village, a short boat ride and sunset over the water, back in Huế for dinner. Allow 3–4 hours in total. Check the weather; in strong wind or rain the boats do not go out.
Option C, garden houses and cycling: rent a bicycle and ride through Kim Long and the Citadel's quieter streets. Some garden houses (nhà vườn) open to visitors; ask locally which ones are open on the day.
As a rough planning range per person, excluding accommodation:
Inside the city you walk or use Grab, which costs little and takes 5–15 minutes for most trips. Bicycles are good for the Citadel, Kim Long and Thiên Mụ in cooler months; many guesthouses lend them. For the tombs and the lagoon, a car with driver or a motorbike tour with a local driver is the practical choice. Agree the route, the stops and the price before you set off, and keep the driver's phone number.
If you have only one day in Huế, do the Imperial City in the morning and take a car to Khải Định and Minh Mạng in the afternoon, with Thiên Mụ on the way back if there is time. It is a full day, but it covers the essentials.
Two full days cover the Imperial City and the main tombs. Add a third day for the river, food or the lagoon, or as a buffer for rain.
Yes, if you want to see rural life and a sunset over open water after two days of monuments. It depends on the weather, so plan it for a clear afternoon.
Either works. Many travellers go from Huế to Hội An via the Hải Vân Pass or the coastal train, which is the same trip in reverse.
The Huế Itineraries contain the day routes, and the Huế Travel Guide covers the history and the sights behind them. Both are available in English, Spanish and German. See all titles in the Huế travel guides collection.
