If it rains at the Goslar Christmas market, shorten the outdoor part and plan the day around one open museum and a warm, seated break. The Tin Figure Museum and the Imperial Palace both open Tuesday to Sunday. The market and the Christmas forest are outdoors, and the forest does not promise any covered space. Our page on the Goslar Christmas market in bad weather sums up the indoor options.

Start indoors in the morning

A rainy day in Goslar works best if you reverse the usual order: museum first, market later. Rain often eases during the day, and you arrive at the stalls already warm and with a clear idea of how long you want to stay outside.

  • Tin Figure Museum: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-17:00, closed on Mondays and on 24 and 25 December and 1 January. Adults €6, reduced €5, family ticket €14. There is no tin-figure casting on Sundays or public holidays.
  • Imperial Palace: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-17:00, last admission 16:30, closed on Mondays. Adult admission €7.50. Construction in the outdoor areas since late September 2026 may change access routes.
  • Goslarsche Höfe: until 5 December, an indoor decoration sale in the Hof-Forum at Okerstraße 32, Monday to Friday 09:00-18:00 and Saturday 09:00-14:00. Free entry.

A museum is more than shelter. At the Tin Figure Museum, take time over individual scenes and compare details. In the Imperial Hall, remember that the paintings date from the nineteenth century and show medieval history through that period's eyes.

Take a real break at midday

A hot drink at a stall does not replace a seat indoors, especially when you have been standing for a while in damp clothes. Choose an open café or restaurant, check its hours directly and book if a table is essential. Around Christmas, do not assume ordinary weekly hours apply. Allow enough time to warm up properly before heading out again.

Visit the market in short stages

In the afternoon, pick just one market area. Marktplatz is a good start if you want to browse stalls, Schuhhof if the Christmas forest is the reason you came. After that first stage, decide together whether another block still feels enjoyable. The guide is clear that a shorter circuit with a good break counts as a complete day plan.

  • Keep it short: one area per stage, then a decision, is enough in steady rain.
  • Protect purchases: paper wrapping and delicate decorations suffer in the wet. Buy at the end of a stage.
  • Know your exit: keep an earlier return train or bus in mind in case the weather gets worse.

What does not work as a plan B

Rammelsberg is tempting on a wet day because part of the Christmas market is underground. But it only runs on 12 and 13 December and needs a ticket booked in advance, with tickets described as non-cancellable. On any other date it is not a spontaneous alternative. Mondays are also tricky: both museums are closed, so a rainy Monday is better spent with a short market visit and a long indoor lunch. On 24 and 25 December the Tin Figure Museum is closed as well.

What to pack for wet weather

  • Clothing: weather-appropriate layers and shoes suitable for longer city walks.
  • Spare items: a spare layer or socks where useful.
  • Bag: one that closes, for gifts and anything paper.
  • Phone: charged, with tickets and confirmations saved offline.
  • Payment: small amounts and room for deposits.
