For children, the Braunschweig Christmas market 2026 has a Christmas workshop in the castle moat from 26 November to 23 December, a wish-list postbox for letters posted by 11 December, Father Christmas on 6 and 13 December and a short puppet show daily at 11:00 from 1 to 23 December. Choose one of these as the highlight and plan a short circuit around it. All dates are in the Braunschweig Christmas Markets 2026 guide.

The children's calendar for 2026

  • Christmas workshop: 26 November to 23 December, in the castle moat. Check the daily hours.
  • Wish-list postbox: beside the Christmas workshop. Post letters by 11 December.
  • Father Christmas: 6 and 13 December. Check the day's programme for exact times.
  • Short puppet show: 1 to 23 December, daily at 11:00, at the Advent hut by the Heinrichslinde tree.

These details come from the city marketing organisation's season announcement of 13 October 2026. Age ranges, supervision and registration arrangements are not copied here from older programmes. Open the current details for your chosen activity before you travel.

One highlight is enough

For families, a short, specific highlight is often more useful than a whole evening among the stalls. If you choose the puppet show, the rest of the visit can be an easy circuit and a food break. If a child is cold or tired, there is no need to add a second activity. A short visit with one good moment often leaves a better memory than a fully completed list.

A short family day

  1. Before travelling: choose one activity and check current daily information and age guidance.
  2. A little earlier: arrive without rushing. Find a toilet and agree on a meeting point before heading to the activity.
  3. At the start: enjoy the activity together, for example the puppet show at 11:00.
  4. Afterwards: walk a manageable part of the market rather than the whole circuit.
  5. To finish: have a warm meal and leave before everyone is exhausted.

The 11:00 start of the puppet show is the beginning of the activity, not a flexible arrival time. Allow for the journey from the station or car park. If you arrive late, a normal market circuit may be the simpler option. Note that on Sundays the stalls open at 11:00 as well.

Staying together and drinks

A busy square is not the place for spontaneous hide-and-seek. With small children, staying together is the simpler choice. Agree on a meeting point that is easy to describe, such as a particular side of the cathedral, and make sure older children know it. Pack spare clothes and the contact details you have agreed on.

Hot drinks can be ordered with or without alcohol. When ordering for a group, make sure the cups are clearly assigned after collection, which is particularly important when children are with you. Ask explicitly for the alcohol-free version rather than guessing from a drink's name.

After 23 December

The workshop and the daily puppet show are announced only until 23 December. If you visit between 26 and 29 December, plan a general family market visit without these activities. The guide does not promise any children's programme on those dates.

Warm breaks for small visitors

Children often get cold sooner than adults. Plan a proper indoor break rather than relying on standing room. The rafts in the castle moat have a roof but no seats and no heating, so a café is the better choice for warming up hands and feet.
