Braunschweig Christmas market 2026: dates, places and opening times
The central Braunschweig Christmas market runs from 25 November to 29 December 2026 around St. Blasii Cathedral, Burgplatz and Platz der Deutschen Einheit. It is closed on 24 and 25 December. Smaller markets at Gut Steinhof, Frankfurter Platz and Nexus have single dates of their own.
When is the Braunschweig Christmas market in 2026?
The central Braunschweig Christmas market is scheduled from 25 November to 29 December 2026. On opening day the ceremony begins at 17:45 and trading runs from 18:00 to 21:00. After that the market is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 21:00 and on Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 to 21:00. It is closed on 24 and 25 December, and on the final day, 29 December, it closes earlier, at 20:00. Smaller events such as Gut Steinhof on 6 December have their own dates.

Where is the Braunschweig Christmas market?
The central market is one event spread over several connected areas in the historic centre. Count them as parts of the same market, not as separate markets with their own seasons.
St. Blasii Cathedral and Burgplatz
The cathedral and Dankwarderode Castle give the market its centre. Burgplatz is where architecture and stalls meet, so it works well for a first circuit to look around and a second one to buy. Agree on a meeting point at a particular side of the cathedral rather than in front of an entrance, where you would block other visitors.
Platz der Deutschen Einheit
This square belongs to the central market. Include it in your circuit before you decide on a purchase or a longer food break, as it gives a fuller picture than staying near the cathedral. The organiser publishes a current stall plan. Use it on the day, since traders and routes can change during the season.
The covered rafts
In the dry historic castle moat you will find covered rafts, each with roughly twenty standing places and no seats. They are meeting areas, not boat trips on the Oker. Until 14:00 they are generally open for public use during market hours, and the Heinrich raft stays open to everyone afterwards. Groups of ten or more can book one.

Workshop, postbox and puppet show
The Christmas workshop in the castle moat is announced for 26 November to 23 December. Letters for the wish-list postbox beside it should be posted by 11 December. Father Christmas is announced for 6 and 13 December, and a short puppet show runs daily at 11:00 from 1 to 23 December at the Advent hut by the Heinrichslinde tree.
Advent singing and culture week
Advent singing at the cathedral is announced for 28 and 29 November at 17:00, with carol singing for families on 5 December at 17:00. The Christmas culture week from 12 to 20 December includes the Christmas Oratorio, trumpet and organ music and Quempas singing. Admission and ticket rules depend on the event.
The rotating stall
For 2026 the city marketing organisation has announced a rotating stall, the Wechselhütte. Four different sellers are scheduled to take turns there between 25 November and 22 December. A particular range may therefore only be there for a short time, so if you like something, ask about the seller's last day and contact details.
Which other Christmas markets are there in Braunschweig?
A few smaller events add a different setting. Each has a single date or short window, and none is part of the walking circuit around the cathedral.
Gut Steinhof
The agricultural machinery museum at Gut Steinhof, Celler Heerstraße 336A, has announced a Christmas market for 6 December 2026 from 11:00 to 17:00. Its setting is the museum with its old machinery. Plan the outward and return journey separately and leave a buffer before any evening event in the centre. The guide found no confirmed admission price.
Frankfurter Platz and Nexus
The city lists an Advent market at Frankfurter Platz on 3 December from 15:00 to 18:00 and the Nexus winter market at Frankfurter Straße 253B on 12 December from 15:00. For Nexus no closing time is given, so do not plan to arrive late. If you come from another city in the evening, you could easily miss the Frankfurter Platz window.
Wintermanege
Wintermanege combines a circus performance with an accompanying Christmas market at a new venue for 2026, Eisenbütteler Straße 5. Public performances are listed from 19 to 22 December. Entry to the market grounds starts one hour before the show, which lasts about two hours with an interval. Ask the organiser whether a market-only visit is possible.
