With children, one market area per day is enough in Bilbao. A break in Casco Viejo followed by a visit to Gabonart from 17:00 works well on a regular day. Family attractions such as Olentzero and Mari Domingi were not confirmed for 2026 at the research date, so build the day around the market itself. The Bilbao Christmas Markets 2026 guide includes a full family route.

Choose one area, not two

Bilbao's markets sit in two separate parts of the city: Doña Casilda Park in the west and Arenal, beside the old town, in the east. Moving between them is a journey, not a few steps. With children, that extra transfer often costs more energy than it is worth.

At Arenal, combine an old-town break with a selected Gabonart visit. In the park area, the market itself remains the focus. Add other entertainment only once its date, access and suitability have been checked.

The guide's family route

The route is written for a day with Gabonart's normal afternoon opening and stays within the old town and Arenal:

  1. Before the market, a break in Casco Viejo: plan food, a toilet stop and a meeting point everyone knows.
  2. A short outdoor stage: walk only the section your route needs. In rain, go straight to the market after the break.
  3. From 17:00, Gabonart: choose a few stalls and let the children describe what they see. Ask before touching objects.
  4. Finish in good time: end while the journey back is still manageable. A small purchase or a discovery written down is a good finish.

The route assumes neither a carousel nor a meeting with Christmas characters. Ages, interests and stamina set the length.

Small tasks that work at a craft fair

Gabonart is a craft fair, which makes it a good place for observation. Decide together what the children would like to look for: a particular colour, a material or a small gift idea. These tasks need no guaranteed attraction.

Questions about how something is made can be asked together. The guide's phrases help: '¿De qué material está hecho?' (What material is it made from?) or '¿Dónde está vuestro taller?' (Where is your workshop?). Leave enough space for other visitors, and ask before handling objects.

Dates and hours that affect families

  • Midday closures: the park market closes 14:00-17:00 and Gabonart 14:30-17:00. Plan lunch or a rest at your accommodation for this gap.
  • Weekday mornings: before 21 December, the park market opens on weekdays only from 17:00.
  • 24 and 31 December: Gabonart finishes at 14:30 and the park market at 14:00. The afternoon family route does not work on these days.
  • 25 December and 1 January: both multiweek markets are closed.

A rainy or longer day

For a longer cultural visit, Itsasmuseum may be an option. It lists lifts, accessible toilets on both levels and rest areas. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00-19:00. Check whether a particular exhibition suits your children's ages and interests; the facilities alone do not answer that.

If you hope to meet Olentzero and Mari Domingi, confirm date, venue and access from the current announcement. A parade and a meeting to hand over letters can be separate events. Activities at Bilbao Exhibition Centre take place in Barakaldo, not in Bilbao itself.

Frequently asked questions

Are there rides or a carousel at the Bilbao Christmas market?

The guide does not confirm any. The park market plans are for local retailers' stalls with food, gifts and decorations, and Gabonart is a craft fair. Treat rides as unconfirmed unless a current announcement lists them.

What is the best time to visit with small children?

A weekend or holiday morning at the park market, or an early start in Gabonart's 11:00 window, leaves the afternoon free for a rest. The family route in the guide uses the 17:00 session on a regular day.

Will Olentzero be in Bilbao in 2026?

At the research date, no verified municipal programme for Olentzero and Mari Domingi had been recorded for this edition. The guide does not move earlier years' dates into 2026.

For the dates of all three markets, see the Bilbao Christmas market 2026 overview.

Research status 27 October 2026. Dates, times and prices are planning information from the organisers' and operators' sources; check them again before travelling.
