Bernkastel-Kues has no railway station of its own. This is how to plan the journey to the Christmas market by train and bus, and how to get home again.

You cannot take a train directly to Bernkastel-Kues. The tourist office lists Wittlich Hauptbahnhof and Traben-Trarbach as nearby stations with bus links into town. Plan the whole journey, including the bus and your return, in the current VRT journey planner for your travel date. For arrival and an overnight stay, see our page on an Advent weekend in Bernkastel-Kues.
The useful starting point depends on your complete journey from home to your destination in Bernkastel-Kues, not on the distance on a map. Search the planner with your date and desired arrival time, and compare both options.
Save the service number, the stop name and the direction. That helps if you need to describe the connection to someone, or if the plan changes at short notice.
A long market evening needs a suitable way back. Choose an achievable return connection first, then work backwards from its departure: the walk from the old town to the stop, some time to find it and your last planned activity. A Saturday closing time of 21:00 says nothing about your last bus.
The guide deliberately gives no last departure or general service frequency. Search results include special services for summer events and older route lists, and these are not a basis for Advent 2026 travel. Use the current VRT planner for your exact date and check short-notice updates on the day.
If you stay overnight, the VRT-GästeTicket can cover a large part of your local travel. It is available to guests at participating accommodation. Within its stated network area it covers buses and second-class regional trains, including the arrival and departure days.
Check a second connection in advance, or arrange an alternative. If a taxi is important for an onward train, confirm it beforehand, because a search result is not a reservation. If you need particular vehicle access, confirm it with the transport operator. A reachable stop does not mean that every bus on your route will meet your individual needs.
Plan to arrive in daylight if you can. The old town is easier to find your way around before dark, and the timber-framed buildings are best seen in daylight. Leave a buffer for the bus from Wittlich or Traben-Trarbach and save the stop where you get off. From there, use a current street map for the walk to the historic market square. On event days such as 5 and 19 December, local barriers may change the usual route.
No. The town has no direct rail connection. Plan a journey with an onward bus, for example via Wittlich Hauptbahnhof.
The guide does not state one, because no confirmed Advent timetable was available at the time of research. Check the VRT planner for your exact date.
No. Only participating hosts issue the VRT-GästeTicket. Clarify eligibility, collection and validity before you travel.
The Bernkastel-Kues Christmas markets guide includes the journey without a car, a return-trip checklist and routes that fit around your bus times.
Research status: 27 October 2026. Connections and ticket conditions are planning information, so please check the official sources and the current timetable before you travel.
