ArtsQuest describes Christkindlmarkt as an all-weather event, so rain on its own is not a reason to expect the market to close. Its tickets follow a no-refund, no-exchange policy, though, and not every activity is guaranteed to run unchanged. On a wet day, keep the market circuit short and pair it with an indoor stop whose hours you have checked. Our page on Bethlehem in the rain has a sample day.

What the all-weather description means

An all-weather event is one that is planned to go ahead in normal winter conditions. It does not create an exception to your booking conditions, and it does not promise that every demonstration, performance or extra activity will operate as usual. If the weather turns, check the organiser's current notices before you set off.

The ticket rule matters most when you buy ahead. Because there are no refunds or exchanges, look at the forecast shortly before you commit to a date. If a short visit is enough, the free Friday window from 5 to 8 pm avoids the question entirely: on open Fridays you enter without a ticket.

Indoor options on the South Side

The National Museum of Industrial History is the natural partner for a rainy market day. It occupies a former electrical repair shop of the steelworks at 602 East Second Street, close to Christkindlmarkt, and covers iron, steel, textiles and industrial working lives.

  • Hours: Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm. Closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
  • Admission: US$18 for adults aged 18 to 64, US$12 for visitors 65 and over, veterans and educators, US$10 for students and young people aged 7 to 17. Children six and under enter free.
  • Note: the Silk & Textile Gallery is in transition, with some objects temporarily off display.

Visit the museum first, then take a shorter circuit at the market. A two-hour igloo reservation can give a group a fixed base during the visit. It holds up to six people but includes only two market admissions.

Indoor options in the historic district

Around Main Street, several indoor stops have their own published hours:

  • Christmas Putz: at Central Moravian Church, visitor address 40 West Church Street. From 27 November it opens Thursday and Friday 1 to 7 pm, Saturday 10 am to 8 pm and Sunday 1 to 5 pm. No ticket is needed and donations are welcome.
  • Moravian Museum: in the 1741 Gemeinhaus at 66 West Church Street. Monday, Thursday and Sunday 11 am to 4 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am to 5 pm. The building has stairs and no elevator.
  • Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts: at 427 North New Street. Friday and Saturday 11 am to 5 pm, Sunday 11 am to 4 pm. Listed as wheelchair accessible.

Christmas City Village and the Live Advent Calendar both take place in the Sun Inn Courtyard. If the weather is poor, keep your time there short and arrive at the 5:30 pm calendar with only a little time to spare.

How to shorten a day without losing it

The guide suggests preparing two versions of the same day. The first contains your full circuit. The second keeps only your main experience and one convenient break that is actually open. If it starts to rain, you switch to the short version rather than inventing a new plan on the move.

  1. Outdoor sights first: the Colonial Industrial Quarter grounds at 145 Ohio Road open from dawn to dusk, with brick surfaces and slopes. Go early or skip them.
  2. Indoor stop next: choose one museum or the Putz, not several in a row.
  3. Market last: a focused circuit with one goal, such as a single gift.
  4. Return saved: note your bus stop and direction or your parking level in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get my money back if it rains?

ArtsQuest publishes a no-refund, no-exchange policy for market tickets, so plan your date with the forecast in mind.

Is Christmas City Village a good choice in the rain?

It is free and in an open courtyard, so a short visit works well, ideally combined with a museum or the Putz nearby.

What should I wear?

Layers that suit both heated rooms and the cold, and footwear for wet ground. Keep tickets and addresses saved for poor reception.

The Bethlehem, Pennsylvania Christmas markets guide lists all indoor options with addresses and prices, plus six routes you can shorten.
