Koh Samui has its own Gulf of Thailand weather. What rain and rough seas affect, how to order a stay around a boat day, and a fallback for each day route.
Thoughtful routes, remarkable places and stories for the road. Find a fresh perspective and travel at your own pace.
Skip to the article ↓Short answer: Koh Samui follows its own Gulf of Thailand weather pattern, so do not take your dates from a Phuket calendar. What affects a trip most is heavy rain and rough seas, because they can disrupt ferries and boat excursions. Check the local forecast and operator notices close to your dates, and build flexibility around anything that crosses water. Most land days on Samui can be swapped for another. A cancelled boat or a missed connection is harder to recover.
Here is how we plan around the weather in our Koh Samui guides: which days are exposed, how to order your stay, and what to use when a plan falls through.
Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand, and its weather does not follow a Phuket calendar. A season described for "Thailand" or for another island may not describe your week on Samui. Use the official Thai weather service and the operators you have booked with as your sources in the days before you travel. For Ang Thong National Marine Park, check park access through the national parks authority as well as the boat company.
Look at the forecast by the day, not just the month. A dry morning does not guarantee an afternoon crossing, and a clear sky over your beach does not tell you how the sea will be for a crossing.
Heat shapes a Samui day as much as rain does. Keep the midday hours lighter and visit temples such as Wat Phra Yai and Wat Plai Laem before the hottest part of the day, allowing for steps at the Big Buddha. Plan a shaded pause after each visit and leave the middle of the day flexible at beaches like Choeng Mon. Arrange the ride home before you settle into dinner, since evening traffic makes even short distances slower.
Put the boat day early, with a flexible day after it. If the operator cancels, you still have time to try again, and you can use the island plan you had ready. Never put the excursion or a ferry immediately before a flight. Keep the first day simple too: a walk to Bophut Beach, a rest and dinner in Fisherman's Village is a good start, and if you land late, keep only the dinner.
Every one of our day routes has a fallback. The ones you are most likely to need:
Samui has no metro, so a changed plan usually means a new road journey. Agree the fare before any taxi or locally arranged ride, and ask whether it is per vehicle or per person. For a rearranged day with several stops, a driver for a half or full day works well if waiting time and the return are clear from the start. Save your hotel address in Thai and your pickup contact somewhere you can open without data. More on this is in our Koh Samui getting-around guide.
Samui has its own Gulf of Thailand pattern, which differs from Phuket, so do not rely on a general Thailand calendar. Check the official Thai weather service and your operators for your specific dates.
Heavy rain and rough seas can affect transfers, and ferry schedules depend on sea conditions. If your route includes a ferry, leave a generous margin before any onward flight.
Stay local: a café and an indoor break in Chaweng, a long sheltered lunch, a walk and a meal in Nathon, or an evening in Fisherman's Village. Our routes each include a rain alternative.
Book with an operator whose programme and cancellation policy you understand, schedule it early in your stay and keep the next day flexible. Do not put it right before a flight.
The Koh Samui Travel Planner with its Excel budget workbook helps you place boat days and buffer days before you book. The Koh Samui Travel Confidence Kit covers transport and what to do when things go wrong, and the complete Koh Samui Travel Guide brings arrival, areas, food and day routes together.
