Koh Samui's temples, viewpoints and beaches grouped by coast, plus how to book an Ang Thong boat day and five day routes with car times and THB budgets.
Thoughtful routes, remarkable places and stories for the road. Find a fresh perspective and travel at your own pace.
Skip to the article ↓Short answer: the best things to do in Koh Samui are the northeastern temples, Wat Phra Yai (the Big Buddha) and Wat Plai Laem, an evening in Fisherman's Village in Bophut, the southern coast around Lamai and Hin Ta Hin Yai, and a boat day to Ang Thong National Marine Park when the sea allows. Group them by coast and each day stays short on the road. You can see a great deal of Samui without circling the island every day.
Below are the places from our Koh Samui guides, grouped the way we route them, with car times between stops and planning budgets in Thai baht (THB).
On days that mix temples and beach, keep beachwear separate and change into suitable clothing before each temple.
Beaches work better with a reason to stay: a walk, a meal nearby or time watching the water. Choeng Mon Beach pairs with the northeastern temples. Lamai Beach changes in atmosphere along the shore. Chaweng Lake is a short land-based walk near the resort area, not a place to swim. Wherever you are, swimming is a separate decision based on the local conditions that day.
Ang Thong is a separate boat day, and it depends on the weather. Our planning budget is THB 2,500–4,500. Compare operators by the actual programme rather than the park name: boat type, pickup, boarding, activities and how physically demanding the day is all differ. Before you pay, confirm the vessel, park access, meals, equipment, the return and the cancellation policy. Our route uses 07:30 to 16:30 as placeholders, so replace them with your booking.
A photograph of a viewpoint does not mean every passenger or every itinerary gets there. Keep the following day free of a tight flight connection, and have a land day ready in case the operator cancels. The sea excursion is one possible highlight of a Samui stay, not a requirement.
For a slower final day, go back to Choeng Mon, add Wat Plai Laem only if you want one more temple, and finish in Bophut.
Fisherman's Village in Bophut deserves a whole evening, not a stop between drives. Walk the waterfront and side streets before choosing where to eat, and check the current market schedule separately: the village is enjoyable without one. Confirm seafood prices and whether a dish is charged by weight, and know how you are getting back before you sit down. Nathon on the west coast is a working town for a short walk and everyday errands. If you are catching a ferry, remember that the town waterfront is not necessarily your departure pier.
Yes. They are 10–20 minutes apart by car, and our northeast route visits both before the hottest hours, then continues to Choeng Mon Beach and Bophut.
It is a very different day from the rest of the island, spent mostly at sea. Book an operator whose programme and cancellation policy you understand, and keep the date flexible in case the weather changes.
Check access and recent weather first. Wet rocks and changing water make a cautious visit to the viewpoint a better plan than assuming swimming is suitable.
Our routes use the west coast around Taling Ngam, after lunch in Nathon. Light and weather vary, so treat it as a quiet pause rather than a guaranteed photograph, and arrange the ride back in advance.
All ten routes, with times, legs, budgets and an alternative for each, are in Koh Samui Itineraries – 10 Day Routes + 3, 5 & 7-Day Plans. The Koh Samui Offline Place Guide keeps the temples, viewpoints and beaches on your phone, and the complete Koh Samui Travel Guide adds arrival, areas, transport and food. Browse all titles in Koh Samui Travel Guides.
Times and prices are planning estimates from our research in September 2026, not timetables or guaranteed prices. Check official sources for your travel dates.
