Bernkastel-Kues Christmas market weekend: arrival, stay and a two-day plan
Two days in Bernkastel-Kues give you time for the old-town market on one day and culture in Kues on the other. The town has no direct rail link, so the journey needs some planning. Here is how to arrive, what to look for in accommodation and how to spread the weekend.

How do you plan an Advent weekend at the Bernkastel-Kues Christmas market?
Choose a weekend between 20 November and 20 December 2026, avoiding Sunday 22 November, when the market is closed. Bernkastel-Kues has no direct train station, so travel by rail to Wittlich Hauptbahnhof or Traben-Trarbach and continue by bus, or drive and park in Kues. On Saturday, visit the Cusanus birthplace museum in the afternoon and the market until 21:00. Keep Sunday lighter, with a final circuit of the old town before you leave.

How do you get to Bernkastel-Kues for the Christmas market?
The useful starting point depends on your complete journey, not on the distance on a map. Search the current VRT planner with your date and desired arrival time.
Via Wittlich or Traben-Trarbach
The tourist office lists Wittlich Hauptbahnhof and Traben-Trarbach as nearby stations with bus links into town. For a rail connection in Wittlich, arrival at the main station matters, because a local bus stop elsewhere in Wittlich is not automatically the same interchange. Save the service number, stop name and direction.
VRT-GästeTicket
Overnight guests at participating accommodation can use the VRT-GästeTicket. Within its stated network area it covers buses and second-class regional trains, including arrival and departure days. Ask your host beforehand how to obtain it for your arrival, since a room booking alone is not a ticket. Travel beyond the VRT area may need extra tickets.
Parking in Kues
The Altstadtparkhaus at Cusanusstraße 5a has a 2-metre entrance clearance and is open around the clock. Between 06:00 and 20:00 the first hour is free, then 1.50 euros per hour up to 12 euros; the overnight period from 20:00 to 06:00 costs 1 euro in total. Other parking areas have their own tariffs, so check the signs on site.
Where should you stay for the Bernkastel-Kues Christmas market?
The guide does not recommend specific hotels. It gives you criteria for choosing a room that fits an evening at the market.
Near the end of your evening
The walk back after the market is an important criterion. Check the actual address and entrance, as the name Bernkastel-Kues alone does not show whether a room is near the market, across the river or in a more distant district. If you plan culture in Kues, staying on that side can fit well.
Three journeys
Compare arrival point to accommodation, accommodation to your first destination, and your last evening stop back to the room. Allow for luggage, winter paths and stairs inside the building. On an event weekend, make sure check-in and a later return fit your plans.
The full price
Ask whether the host takes part in the VRT-GästeTicket scheme. Compare the total price including breakfast, parking and your room occupancy. Use actual offers for your dates rather than assumed average prices, and add food, drinks, transport and purchases separately to see the real cost of the weekend.

Frequently asked questions
Can you get to Bernkastel-Kues by train?
Not directly. Bernkastel-Kues has no rail connection of its own. The tourist office lists Wittlich Hauptbahnhof and Traben-Trarbach as nearby stations with bus links into town. Plan the whole journey in the current VRT planner for your travel date, and save the return connection too, including the walk from the old town to the stop.
Which weekend is best for the Bernkastel-Kues Christmas market?
It depends on what you want. St Nicholas weekend, 5 and 6 December, has the torchlight swim on Saturday evening and the St Nicholas walk on Sunday morning. The final weekend, 19 and 20 December, has the fireworks on Saturday and the last market day on Sunday. Avoid the opening weekend Sunday, 22 November, when the market is closed.
Is there a free bus ticket for hotel guests in Bernkastel-Kues?
Overnight guests at participating accommodation can receive the VRT-GästeTicket, which covers buses and second-class regional trains within its network area, including arrival and departure days. Not every host takes part, so ask before you book and find out how to obtain the ticket for your arrival journey.
How late do buses run after the Bernkastel-Kues Christmas market?
The guide does not give a last departure, because no confirmed Advent 2026 timetable was available at the time of research and older search results include summer services. Check the VRT planner for your exact date. A market closing time of 21:00 on Saturday does not tell you when the last bus leaves.
