Short answer: with one day in Byron Bay, walk from Main Beach past The Pass and Wategos up to Cape Byron Lighthouse. A second day works best inland at The Farm and Bangalow, or in Bangalow and Newrybar. On a third day, slow down in Brunswick Heads or Lennox Head, or keep it in town with a coffee-and-beach morning. Central Byron works on foot, but the hinterland days need a car, a driver or a booked tour.

These are the routes we use in our Byron Bay guides, with suggested start times, walking legs and a fallback for bad weather.

Before you plan: town days and car days

Decide early between a walkable beach holiday and a wider Northern Rivers trip. That choice shapes where you stay and what each day costs more than any list of sights. If you are based in the town centre, days one and three below need no vehicle. Day two does. A hired car is useful if you are comfortable and authorised to drive; a booked tour or driver saves you parking and navigation. Do not assume a local bus will get you back from a late dinner.

Byron Bay in 1 day: the headland

  • 09:00 Main Beach. Orient yourself and have a first look at the sea. Swim only between the flags and on current lifeguard advice.
  • 11:30 The Pass. About 35–55 minutes on foot from Main Beach. Watch the surfers, give them space, and do not take a famous break as a promise of safe swimming.
  • 14:00 Wategos Beach. About 25–40 minutes further. A small beach that suits a slow break before the climb.
  • 16:30 Cape Byron Lighthouse. About 35–55 minutes uphill. Allow for steps and exposure, and check park alerts before you go.

The full official Walgun Cape Byron Walking Track is a 3.7 km loop, but it is a separate route choice, not an extra on top of every leg above. Steps, stops and heat make time a better measure than distance. The lighthouse café was listed as closed until further notice at our research date, so plan food and drinks elsewhere. Our planning budget for this day is AUD 50–100. If heat, mobility or alerts rule out the headland, a shorter beach walk is the sensible swap.

Byron Bay in 2 days: add the hinterland

Keep the headland day and add one inland day. Pick one of these, not both.

  • The Farm and Bangalow. Lunch at The Farm in Ewingsdale (reserve if the meal matters), time to look around the working property where visitors are allowed, then 20–35 minutes by car to Bangalow for a village walk. Planning budget: AUD 80–160, assuming shared self-drive costs.
  • Bangalow and Newrybar. One village in the morning, a booked meal in the other. They are 15–25 minutes apart by car. Let the restaurant booking set the order and check its opening days. Planning budget: AUD 80–170.

Bangalow is a place to browse under the verandahs and stop for a while, not a photo beside a parked car. Check market or event dates specifically; there is no daily programme. If weather or traffic slows you down, stay in one place and make lunch longer.

You may be tempted by Minyon Falls Lookout in Nightcap National Park instead. Allow 60–90 minutes from Byron to the lookout area and check NSW National Parks alerts first. On 30 September 2026 part of Nightcap Range Road was closed after a landslip, with access to Minyon Falls via Minyon Falls Road. The lookout and the longer waterfall walk are different commitments, and the villages make a more coherent day if access is restricted.

Byron Bay in 3 days: slow down

For the third day, choose one of three pace-setters:

  • Brunswick Heads. Allow 25–45 minutes by car from Byron. Walk the town and the riverside, eat locally and come back without adding a string of beaches. Planning budget: AUD 65–130.
  • Lennox Head. Also 25–45 minutes away. Pick a coastal walk that suits the conditions, have a long lunch and return at an easy pace. Planning budget: AUD 65–140.
  • A town day. Breakfast, a walk from Main Beach to Clarkes Beach (20–35 minutes each way), lunch back in town and one more short outing. No car needed. Planning budget: AUD 45–90.

If your third day is also your departure day, keep it to a morning by the sea: Main Beach, Clarkes Beach and a final stop at the Byron Visitor Centre. Your airport transfer sets the cutoff. Leave time to collect bags and check out instead of squeezing in one last distant outing.

Other days in our routes cover North Beach with the short Byron Bay Train, and the southern beaches around Arakwal National Park and Tallow Beach. The train is a local experience, not an airport link, so check its operating calendar before building a day around it.

Weather, swimming and wildlife

A coastal holiday still needs a weather plan. Heat, storms, surf and strong wind change what is sensible outdoors. Check park alerts before a headland or rainforest walk and follow current lifeguard advice for swimming. Whale watching is seasonal and sightings cannot be promised. A current notice also closes some cottage beach-access paths near Clarkes Beach because of erosion; use the signed public alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough for Byron Bay?

One day covers the town beach and the walk to Cape Byron Lighthouse. You will not see the hinterland villages, which need a second day and a vehicle.

Can you do Byron Bay without a car?

Yes, if you stay in the town centre and stick to the beaches and headland. For Bangalow, Newrybar, The Farm or Minyon Falls, hire a car or book a tour or driver.

How long is the Cape Byron walk?

The official Walgun Cape Byron Walking Track is a 3.7 km loop. Steps, heat and stops for the view mean you should plan by time rather than distance.

Is Bangalow worth a visit from Byron Bay?

It is worth half a day if you give it time for shops and a meal. Pair it with The Farm or Newrybar rather than rushing through on the way somewhere else.
