THAILAND · GETTING TO KOH SAMUI

How do you get to Koh Samui: fly into Samui or go via Surat Thani and the ferry?

Samui Airport is on the island; Surat Thani is on the mainland, with a road journey and a ferry still to come. Booking sites often show both for the region, but they are not the same arrival. Here you can compare the two routes honestly, follow each step and see how much buffer to leave, above all before your flight home.

Should you fly into Samui or go via Surat Thani?

For the simplest arrival, fly into Samui Airport (USM): it is on the island, and from arrivals you allow roughly 15–35 minutes to Chaweng or Bophut, 25–45 minutes to Maenam and 35–60 minutes to Lamai. Surat Thani (URT) is on the mainland, so you still need a road transfer and a ferry, and each part has to be booked and checked, or covered by one clearly defined through-service. Sea conditions can disrupt the ferry, so leave a generous margin, especially before your flight home. Whichever you choose, save the hotel address in Thai and the pickup contact offline.

Samui Airport, Surat Thani with the ferry, or a through-service?

The two airports sit on different sides of the water. The choice changes how many handovers you have and how exposed your arrival is to the weather.

SAMUI AIRPORT (USM)

Best for a short, predictable arrival

You land on the island and continue by road. At arrivals, compare the airport transport desk with a hotel pickup and confirm the total price, the vehicle, room for your luggage and the exact destination. Road buffers are short: about 15–35 minutes to Chaweng or Bophut, 25–45 to Maenam and 35–60 to Lamai, with traffic, hotel access and weather on top. The catch: compare flights and fares for your dates yourself; this page does not quote them.

SURAT THANI (URT) + FERRY

Best if your flight options work better on the mainland

You land in Surat Thani on the mainland, travel by road to the pier, cross to Samui by ferry and take another road transfer to your hotel. Book and verify each part, and check the ferry operator and the exact pier on your booking, because different services may use different piers on the island. The catch: more handovers, more lifting of luggage and a ferry schedule that is vulnerable to sea conditions.

THROUGH-SERVICE FROM SURAT THANI

Best if you go via the mainland and want fewer handovers

Instead of booking road, ferry and island transfer separately, you book one clearly defined service for the whole journey. Check what it actually includes: the pickup point at the airport, the ferry and pier, luggage, and whether it ends at your hotel or at the island pier. The catch: it still depends on the ferry, so the weather risk remains.

Our suggestion: first-time visitors, families and anyone arriving late should fly into Samui Airport if the schedule and budget work, and prebook a hotel pickup. If you land in Surat Thani, prefer a clearly defined through-service or book every leg with times and piers in writing. For the flight home via Surat Thani, plan a generous buffer, and if the sea is rough, consider leaving the island a day earlier.

Arriving on Koh Samui, step by step

The first step decides everything else: know which airport is on your ticket.

STEP 1

Before you book: check the airport code

Look for USM or URT on the flight, not only the word Samui or the name of the region. A booking page may present both for the same area, but URT means a mainland arrival with a road-and-ferry journey still ahead.

Save the hotel address in Thai, the hotel phone number and the pickup contact offline. For a URT arrival, also save the ferry operator, the pier on your booking and the times of each leg.

STEP 2

On arrival: make the handover work

At USM, go to the airport transport desk or the hotel pickup you arranged, and confirm the total, the vehicle, the luggage and the exact destination before you leave. Ask whether a quoted price is per vehicle or per person.

At URT, follow your booking to the road transfer and check the departure pier and the ferry before you set off. If your flight was late, contact the operator straight away to find out whether your connection still works.

STEP 3

On the island: the last stretch

From the island pier or the airport, continue by road to your hotel. Steep villa roads and hillside entrances can make the final approach slower than the map suggests, so ask your host how it works.

Keep the first evening local. A walk to the beach and dinner nearby, for example in Bophut, is a better start than crossing the island after a long travel day.

Rough seas, late arrivals and the trip home

On Samui, weather and handovers cause more problems than distance.

Rough seas and missed connections

Heavy rain and rough seas can affect ferries and transfers. Check the local forecast and operator notices close to your travel date, and keep the ferry contact and booking reference offline. If a crossing is delayed or cancelled, tell your hotel and your pickup straight away; with a through-service, ask how the operator handles this before you pay. A dry morning does not guarantee an afternoon crossing.

The flight home

From USM, work back from your airline's check-in guidance and add the road buffer from your area, plus room for traffic and weather. Via Surat Thani, leave a generous contingency before the flight, because the ferry schedule can change with sea conditions. Do not book an Ang Thong boat day or another weather-dependent excursion immediately before a travel day.

How long does it take, and when is it hardest?

From Samui Airport, allow about 15–35 minutes to Chaweng or Bophut, 25–45 minutes to Maenam and 35–60 minutes to Lamai after leaving arrivals. These are editorial road buffers, not timetables; traffic, hotel access and weather can extend them. Via Surat Thani, the total depends on the road leg, the ferry and the island transfer, so plan it from the times on your bookings rather than from a single figure. Samui has its own Gulf of Thailand weather pattern, so do not copy a Phuket calendar: check the local forecast and treat rough seas as a real reason to change a plan.

    Worth knowing
  • Leave a flexible day after any important boat booking.
  • Check the Thai Meteorological Department forecast and operator notices a few days before you travel.
  • Save the hotel address in Thai and test that it opens offline before you leave home.

Before you travel to Koh Samui

Five things to check before you leave home.

Getting to Koh Samui, your questions answered

Is it better to fly into Samui or Surat Thani?

Samui Airport is on the island, so the arrival is shorter and has fewer handovers. Surat Thani is on the mainland and needs a road-and-ferry journey. Compare flights and fares for your dates, then weigh them against the extra time, luggage handling and weather risk of the ferry.

How long from Samui Airport to Chaweng, Bophut or Lamai?

Allow about 15–35 minutes to Chaweng or Bophut, 25–45 minutes to Maenam and 35–60 minutes to Lamai after leaving arrivals. These are planning buffers; traffic, hotel access and weather can add time.

Where does the ferry from Surat Thani arrive on Samui?

That depends on the operator. Different services may use different piers on the island, so check the operator and the exact pier printed on your booking, and pass it on to your hotel or pickup.

What happens if the ferry is cancelled?

Tell your hotel and pickup at once and follow the operator's instructions. Before you pay for a through-service, ask how delays and cancellations are handled. Leave a generous buffer before any onward flight, because ferries depend on sea conditions.

How do I get from Samui Airport to my hotel?

Compare the airport transport desk with a hotel pickup, and confirm the total price, the vehicle, luggage space and the exact destination. Ask whether a price is per vehicle or per person, and keep the hotel address in Thai ready to show.
