SIEG VALLEY, GERMANY · BY TRAIN AND BUS
How do you get to Hennef and Stadt Blankenberg by train and bus?
In Hennef, reaching a station does not mean reaching your destination: between Blankenberg station and the historic hilltop town there is a climb of its own, and many villages are served only by bus or an on-demand shared taxi. Compare the options, follow the arrival step by step and see what helps with luggage and a late arrival.
How do you reach Hennef and Stadt Blankenberg by train and bus?
By train: the town lists the RE 9 regional express and the S 12 and S 19 suburban lines for Hennef. For the centre, Geistingen and the Kulturlandweg trail, Hennef station is your starting point; for Stadt Blankenberg, plan the walk from Blankenberg station up onto the ridge as a separate leg. Villages are reached by bus or by the Anruf-Sammeltaxi, a shared taxi that must be booked at least 60 minutes ahead. Our sources do not describe routes, journey times or fares from Cologne, Bonn or the airport; the current journey planner has those.

Hennef station, Blankenberg station or bus and shared taxi?
Hennef has no single arrival point. The central town and Geistingen, the Sieg valley and the hill villages each need a different final leg.
Best for the centre, Geistingen and the Kulturlandweg
Hennef station is the obvious anchor for a trip without a car. From here you find your way around the centre, walk to your accommodation or set off on the Kulturlandweg, which according to Naturregion Sieg starts and ends at the station: about ten kilometres, moderately demanding. The catch: an early train loses its advantage if it is followed by a long wait for a village bus. If you stay near the Siegbogen, the Hennef im Siegbogen stop may be better placed; check on a current map.
Best for the castle and old town of Stadt Blankenberg
Stadt Blankenberg sits on a ridge above the river Sieg. Arriving by train, you do not step out between the castle and the half-timbered houses; plan the walk from the station as its own stage, with time to find your way and for the climb. The catch: the name Blankenberg in the timetable is not a route description, and the castle has seasonal opening hours with Monday as its closing day. The waymarked Burgweg trail starts at the Stein walkers' car park, not at the station.
Best for villages such as Bödingen and trailheads in the hills
Buses open up more of Hennef but need preparation outside the centre: search the village name first, then the right stop. For the family trail near Lanzenbach, for example, the town names bus line 524, and the Marienweg can be reached via Bödingen. The Anruf-Sammeltaxi (AST) runs on published routes and stops and must be booked at least 60 minutes before departure, by phone on 02241 499 999 or online through the RSVG transport company. The catch: an on-demand trip does not come unless booked, and a village bus does not run later just because it is still light.
Our suggestion: on a first visit, stay within easy reach of Hennef station and give Stadt Blankenberg a day of its own, climb included. If you plan to hike from a village, plan the bus or AST for the outward and return trip together. With heavy luggage, go to your accommodation first and head up to the hilltop town without it.
Hennef by train and bus, step by step
Three stages, best checked in this order.
Before you leave: plan to your accommodation
Search the connection to your actual accommodation or first stop, not just to Hennef. Check it a few days ahead and again shortly before you travel, and look out for replacement buses that leave from different places and take longer.
Write down the exact names of your arrival and return stops; a photo of the stop sign helps when you search in the evening. Keep your accommodation address outside the booking app and arrange a late key handover in advance.
At the station: get your bearings and drop your bags
At Hennef station, first find the way to your accommodation, a place for a break and the stop for your next outing. A small overview map says little about how a route feels with a wheeled suitcase, especially in the rain.
Drop your luggage before setting out, and ask your accommodation about storage beforehand. An unplanned detour to a rural address can take longer than the change itself. After a tiring journey, a short walk in town suits you better than heading straight out on a hill trail.
Up to Stadt Blankenberg and back
For Stadt Blankenberg, take the right connection to Blankenberg station and plan the walk up as its own part of the outing. Check the opening hours of the castle and the local museum in the Katharinenturm first, since small museums often open only in limited slots.
Base the end of your visit on the train home, not on the minute it leaves: after many stops, the walk down can take longer than you expect. Note an earlier and a later connection so you can react to weather or tiredness.
Late arrivals, luggage and step-free routes
Trouble rarely starts on the train; it starts on the last leg.
Arriving late or returning to a village in the evening
If you arrive late, the key handover matters more than a vaguely flexible check-in, so ask your accommodation about it directly. A place with a view can be ideal for walkers and awkward if you need a late train every day. For an evening in a village or the end of a hike, the Anruf-Sammeltaxi is an option, but only as a confirmed booking: a saved request is not a ride. Without a confirmed way back, do not count on sorting it out on the spot.
Wheelchairs, pushchairs and large luggage
Check the actual access and the current state of the lifts at your station; our guide does not certify any station as step-free. Stadt Blankenberg has slopes and historic paving, and the Katharinenturm is a tower with its own spatial limits. If you travel with a wheelchair, pushchair, child seat or very large luggage, discuss it with the Anruf-Sammeltaxi before planning, since a suitable vehicle cannot be assumed. The tourist information office in the Historic Town Hall can help you find the right contacts.
How long does it take, and when does it get tight?
Our sources give no journey times from Cologne, Bonn or the airport; they depend on where you start, the day and any replacement services, and the current journey planner shows them. For planning the day, the last leg matters more: according to Naturregion Sieg, the Burgweg around Stadt Blankenberg is about six kilometres with roughly two and a half hours of walking, and the Kulturlandweg from Hennef station about ten kilometres. Timing gets tight in the villages in the evening, because buses do not run later in summer just because it stays light. In winter, historic streets can be slippery when wet or icy, and waiting at a stop in the cold is unpleasant.
-
Worth knowing
- Book the Anruf-Sammeltaxi with a clear buffer, not based on your fastest walking time.
- Remember the castle's Monday closing day before you visit Burg Blankenberg.
- Do not plan your departure day right up to the last possible train.

Hennef by train and bus: your questions
Which trains serve Hennef?
The town's travel page lists the RE 9 regional express and the S 12 and S 19 suburban lines. Which train actually runs on your travel day is shown by the current journey planner. Check it a few days ahead and again shortly before you leave.
How do I get to Hennef from Cologne, Bonn or the airport?
Our sources do not describe specific connections, journey times or fares from Cologne, Bonn or Cologne/Bonn Airport. Enter your accommodation or first stop in the journey planner, not just Hennef. The arrival guide Hennef: Entspannt ankommen has a chapter on getting from Cologne/Bonn Airport.
Which station is right for Stadt Blankenberg?
Blankenberg station, but the historic town with the castle sits on a ridge above the Sieg. The walk up is a stage of its own with a climb. Allow time for it and plan your return around your train.
How does the Anruf-Sammeltaxi in Hennef work?
It runs on published routes and stops and must be booked at least 60 minutes before the scheduled start. The town gives the number 02241 499 999, and the RSVG offers online booking. Give your start, destination, number of people and any special luggage; check current fares and conditions with the operator.
Can I take my bike with the Deutschlandticket?
According to the VRS transport association, bikes are not included in the Deutschlandticket. Even with an extra bike ticket, carriage depends on the rules and available space, and replacement buses have their own conditions. So do not rely on a single last train.
Which Tabiara guide helps with the journey, and is it in English?
Hennef: Entspannt ankommen (the arrival guide) plans the whole journey by train, bike or car, including Cologne/Bonn Airport and late arrivals. For local buses, tickets and cycling, add the transport guide. Both come in English, Spanish and German, so you can choose the English edition.
