In short: Yes, Tegernsee works well without a car. Regional buses link the five lake towns and the trailheads, the guest card covers scheduled buses within MVV zones 6 to 9, boats cross the lake in season, and the cycle route around the lake is about 21 km.

Regional buses

Buses connect Gmund, Tegernsee town, Bad Wiessee, Rottach-Egern and Kreuth, and reach trailheads in the mountains. Note the line that serves your accommodation and the last evening departure before you head out.

Boats

Boats are a good way to cross between the lake towns, not only a round trip. They run in season; the 2026 summer timetable ended on 4 October. Check the current schedule before you plan a day around them.

The guest card

The guest card includes scheduled buses within MVV zones 6 to 9 and rail travel between Tegernsee and Moosrain. It does not cover the journey from Munich. The TegernseeCard is a separate offer from participating hosts.

Cycling and walking

The cycle circuit around the lake is about 21 km. Families can pick shorter sections and return by boat or bus. Walking the whole shore takes most of a day, so many visitors combine stretches on foot with a boat crossing.

Cable car

The Wallbergbahn in Rottach-Egern takes you up for the view over the lake. It closes for maintenance in November, so check operating times for your dates.
