From Braunschweig main station you continue by local public transport to the stops Rathaus, Münzstraße or Schloss, which the city names as useful for the Christmas market. Use the Braunschweiger Verkehrs-GmbH (BSVG) journey planner with your actual date and time, and save your return connection before you start browsing. For a full car-free trip, see our page on a Braunschweig Christmas market weekend without a car.

The three stops for the market

  • Rathaus: one of the stops the city names for the Christmas market.
  • Münzstraße: another option for the central market area.
  • Schloss: also named by the city for the market.

Choose your stop according to your first destination. If you go straight to the market, pick the one that suits the part you want to see first, for example the cathedral and Burgplatz or Platz der Deutschen Einheit. If you want to drop luggage at your accommodation or start at a museum, plan the route from there instead. When you arrive, take a moment to note the way back to your stop. In the dark, with the market lit and busy, decorated stalls all start to look alike.

Use the journey planner, not an old route number

The BSVG journey planner shows which connection from the main station suits your travel day. Search with the actual date and planned arrival time. An arbitrary route number from an older travel report is not a reliable basis for the winter timetable. If your mobile signal is poor on the day, a screenshot of your outward and return connections helps.

The guide recommends saving three details before you set off: your stop in the centre, the return journey to the main station and a later alternative.

Getting back in good time

The final trip to the main station belongs in your time plan. Do not start it when your long-distance train is already only minutes from departure. Keep the last half-hour of your visit free of fixed plans if you cannot risk missing your connection. Return your cup before you set off, as you will not want to look for the right stall at the last moment.

Remember the market closing times. On most days the stalls close at 21:00, and on 29 December at 20:00. On opening day, 25 November, trading only runs from 18:00 to 21:00, so a long day visit is not possible then.

Travelling as a group

For groups, agree on a meeting point away from the platform. People arriving on different trains can join up there before continuing into the centre together. One person should collect the details: exact place, time and a reachable contact. Agree on an alternative in case messages do not arrive immediately in the crowds. If your group has booked a raft in the castle moat, do not set the slot just after your train is due.

Step-free travel

For accessible travel, think about the vehicle, the stop and the walk afterwards together. An accessible stop alone does not mean that every entrance or market area can be reached without obstacles. The guide makes no unchecked promise that the whole central market is fully accessible, so ask specific questions about the route from your stop if this matters to you.

How do I reach Gut Steinhof or Wintermanege without a car?
