In short: Yes, you can explore Sylt without a car. Line 1 runs from Westerland via Wenningstedt and Kampen to List, line 2 via Rantum to Hörnum, and lines 3 and 3a serve Keitum, Munkmarsch and Braderup. The Deutschlandticket is accepted on regular buses, and you pay cashless on board. Bikes fill the gaps, as long as you plan around the wind.
Westerland is the hub. If you stay elsewhere, note which line stops near your accommodation and how often it runs in the evening. The summer timetable in 2026 runs until 1 November; the winter timetable has fewer journeys.
The island bus operator accepts the Deutschlandticket on regular services. Payment on board is cashless, so carry a card or phone. Your guest card mainly covers beach access; check with your host what else it includes.
The island is flat, but the wind decides how hard a ride feels. Ride into the wind on the way out and let it carry you back. Many paths run behind the dunes or along the Wadden side. If the weather turns, check whether you can take the bike on the bus.
Many highlights are best on foot: the Rotes Kliff, the Morsum-Kliff, the lanes of Keitum or the walk round the Hörnum-Odde. Stay on marked paths in the dunes and nature reserves, and never walk onto the mudflats without a guided tidal-flat walk.
Yes, on regular island buses. Check the operator's current conditions for special services.
Take line 1, which runs via Wenningstedt and Kampen to List.
No. Payment on board is cashless.
Getting Around Sylt by Bus, Bike & Train explains lines, tickets, cycling and step-free travel. The Sylt Day Routes start from stations or bus stops, and the Sylt planning page brings everything together. For the evenings, the novel A Room for Winter is set in Wenningstedt and Tinnum.
As of 20 October 2026. Lines, timetables and ticket rules change; check the official sources before you travel.
