With children, the guide recommends one shared main activity, one market area and an indoor break. The 5e Lieu on Place du Château offers free interactive exhibitions and family facilities, and the Historical Museum is free for under-18s. The family route and the facilities are set out in the Strasbourg Christmas Markets 2026 travel guide (PDF).

Start with one wish per person

Let each family member suggest one wish, then choose a manageable focus together. A cultural venue and one market area can be enough for an afternoon. The number of stalls you visit does not measure a good day, and not every family wants to move between several busy squares. Decide before you leave what you will drop when people get tired.

The 5e Lieu for families

The exhibition Un voyage à Strasbourg uses models, projections and interactive elements, which give children specific things to look at. Pick a question that interests everyone, such as how water shapes the city or which buildings change the feel of a square, and look for the answer outside afterwards.

  • Facilities: the venue lists a changing table, a loan pushchair against identification, a lift and accessible toilets. Check the availability of individual aids at reception.
  • Admission: the exhibitions are free; workshops and guided visits may have a charge.
  • Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 11:00 to 18:00, Sunday 11:00 to 17:00, closed Mondays.

The Historical Museum for curious children

Look together for an object whose modern equivalent you recognise, and talk about what has changed. The museum describes playful stations and selected replicas to try. Touch only objects that are clearly meant for handling. Under-18s go free, while adult admission is €9. On weekdays the museum closes from 13:00 to 14:00, so plan around lunch. Not every historical subject suits every age, so choose your focus.

A family afternoon around Place du Château

Route 5 in the guide keeps everything in one place and avoids an extra crossing of the city centre.

  1. 5e Lieu: begin with the exhibition and choose a shared question.
  2. Pause: use the facilities as needed and check how everyone feels.
  3. Market on Place du Château: look for a detail that recalls the exhibition, or choose a small souvenir.
  4. A clear route back: end the afternoon before an optional extra becomes an obligation.

Proximity does not guarantee clear paths. With a pushchair, check crowds and the connection between the entrance and the market when you arrive.

Between stops

Agree on a meeting point that is easy to identify and talk through what to do if someone gets separated. A photo of the spot is more useful than 'meet at the Christmas market'. Plan food, toilets and a break before the next destination.

The city's FAQ places the Village de l'Avent in Square Louise Weiss. Specific performances or workshops there need a current, dated listing. Baby and quiet rooms mentioned on older Marché OFF pages also need confirmation for 2026 before you rely on them.
