You can reach the Quedlinburg Christmas markets by train and bus. The organiser recommends public transport and points visitors to the INSA journey planner. Look up the outward and return journeys together for your exact date, because a convenient arrival does not tell you how late you can stay. For a full weekend, see our page on an Advent weekend in Quedlinburg without a car.

Why arriving without a car makes sense

On courtyard weekends, special vehicle access arrangements apply in the historic centre. Driving as close as possible and hoping for a space does not work during the event. Arriving by train and bus avoids that question altogether and leaves you free to stay for the evening lights, as long as your return connection fits.

Within the centre, the main destinations are close together. The Old Town holds Marktplatz, many courtyard entrances and Finkenherd, where the Living Advent Calendar starts. The winter market at Mathildenbrunnen is in the New Town. Stiftsberg with the castle museum lies in a different direction and deserves its own block of time.

Plan your return first

The guide recommends an order that sounds simple but saves stress: plan the return journey and a possible meal stop first, then divide the remaining time by your interests. That way the final circuit does not turn into a race for the train.

  • Save your connection: plus an earlier and a later alternative where available.
  • Long-distance trains: if you have a fixed connection, do not stay at the market until the last possible moment.
  • Walking time: allow time between your final market stop and departure, including paying and putting on coats.
  • Reduced mobility: check vehicle and station access with the relevant operator in advance.

Marktplatz stays open until 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and until 20:00 on other days. Those hours are only useful if a confirmed connection home matches them.

Travelling as a group

For groups, meeting at a fixed point in town before walking to the station is more useful than trying to find each other on the platform. Agree a meeting time early in the day, so everyone can browse separately and still leave together.

Gernrode and Bad Suderode without a car

Both places belong to the municipality of Quedlinburg but need separate journey searches. Older route timetables may explain the general connection, but they do not confirm a specific Advent 2026 departure. Check the walk between the stop and the venue too.

  • Advent im Stiftshof, Gernrode: 11–13 December. Friday 16:00–22:00, Saturday 14:00–22:00, Sunday 11:00–19:00.
  • Grubenlichtermarkt, Bad Suderode: 28 November, 14:00–20:00, with the miners' parade from 17:00.

A service during the day does not guarantee the same frequency in the evening. The guide does not assume that a service after the programme exists, so only plan a late stay if one explicitly fits.

A car-free day in four hours

On a weekday from Monday to Thursday, the guide's four-hour route starts at 14:00 at Marktplatz, continues with an Old Town walk at 15:00, Mathildenbrunnen at 16:00 and a break at 17:00, and ends at 18:00 in the centre. Add your walk to the station to that plan. On 21 December, remember that Mathildenbrunnen closes at 18:00.

Frequently asked questions

Which journey planner should I use?

The organiser points visitors to INSA. Use current information for your travel date rather than an older timetable.

Can I walk between the two central markets?

Yes. The guide's weekday route walks from Marktplatz through the Old Town to Mathildenbrunnen. Use a current map, as the guide's overview is not to scale.

Can I visit Gernrode and Quedlinburg on the same day?

On 12 or 13 December it can work with a suitable connection. Choose only one further focus in Quedlinburg so the day does not become mostly travelling and waiting.
