Kintetsu or JR to Nara, then Kofukuji, the deer, Todaiji, Kasuga Taisha and Naramachi on foot, with times and a yen budget.
Thoughtful routes, remarkable places and stories for the road. Find a fresh perspective and travel at your own pace.
Skip to the article ↓Nara is an easy day trip from Osaka: the Kintetsu Nara Line from Osaka-Namba reaches Kintetsu-Nara station in roughly 35–45 minutes, a short walk from Nara Park. In one day you can see Kofukuji, the deer park, Todaiji with the Great Buddha and Kasuga Taisha on foot, and finish in the old Naramachi quarter. Below are the train choices, a walking route and a yen budget; our Osaka Itineraries include a Nara day trip among their ten routes.
Nara was Japan's capital in the 8th century, and its great temples and shrines from that period are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unlike Kyoto, the main sights sit close together in and around one large park, so you can do it all on foot.
A one-way fare on either line is usually in the range of ¥600–900. Check current fares and the departure board on the day; express and local trains share the same platforms.
Plan on ¥4,000–8,000 per person. Check admission prices on the official sites before you go.
Yes. It is close, cheap to reach and the main sights fit easily into one day on foot. If you only have three days in Osaka, a half day is possible, but a full day is more relaxed.
Take the Kintetsu Nara Line from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nara station (about 35–45 minutes). The park starts a 5–10-minute walk away, next to Kofukuji.
Mostly, if you are calm and careful. Only feed them the official crackers, do not tease them, and watch children. The deer can bite or butt, especially in autumn during the rutting season.
A Nara day trip, together with nine other day routes and 3, 5 and 7-day plans, is in Osaka Itineraries – 10 Day Routes + 3, 5 & 7-Day Plans. Train choices, IC cards and passes are explained in the Osaka Train Survival Kit. For the train ride back, read The Mending Room in Osaka, a cozy novel about a mending shop in Osaka's neighbourhood lanes, available in English and Spanish.
Times and prices are planning estimates, not timetables or guaranteed prices. Check official sources for your travel dates.
