You can see most of Hennef without a car if you use Hennef station as your hub, plan bus trips to the villages with the return fixed before you set off, and book the Anruf-Sammeltaxi (AST) at least 60 minutes ahead where a service runs on request. The hills are the tricky part: Stadt Blankenberg, Bödingen and the higher villages need a planned access route, not just a matching station name. Once that is clear, the centre, the Sieg and several marked trails are easy on foot.

This is the approach we use in our guide to getting around Hennef by bus and train.

Trains: which station is really yours?

According to the town's travel information, Hennef station is served by the RE 9 regional express and the S-Bahn lines S 12 and S 19. Which trains actually run on your day comes from the journey planner, so check a few days before you travel and again just before you leave, including any notes about replacement buses and where they depart.

Ask three separate questions for every trip: where does the train stop, where does your walk begin, and where is the place you want to see? This matters in Hennef:

  • Hennef station is the natural start for the centre and for trails whose official description begins there.
  • Hennef im Siegbogen may be closer to your accommodation or a particular address. Check a current map rather than choosing by name.
  • Blankenberg station is not in the historic hilltop town. Plan the way up as its own stage, with time for the height difference.

Take a photo of the exact stop name you need. It saves confusion when you search for the return in the evening.

Buses to the villages

Search for connections using the village name first and then the specific stop. A result in the right district can still leave an awkward walk, so check the map between the stop and your entrance or trailhead. Plan outbound and return together, for the right date, weekday and school holiday period.

Two examples from the town's own information: for the Muh und Mäh family trail near Lanzenbach, it recommends bus line 524 from Hennef Bahnhof, because parking there is limited. The Marienweg can be reached via Bödingen. Treat these as starting points, not a timetable.

On a walking day, know an earlier and a later return connection and set your breaks so the earlier one stays within reach. And avoid chaining several infrequent connections in one day. Ride out to one village, explore it, come back, then decide on the next part of town.

The Anruf-Sammeltaxi: book it like an appointment

The AST, a shared on-demand taxi, can make evenings and walk endings in the villages much easier. It works along published routes and stops, so first check that your plan fits the service. Per the town's current information, you must book at least 60 minutes before the scheduled start. The phone number given is 02241 499 999, and the RSVG also offers digital booking.

  • Give start, destination, number of people and any large luggage.
  • Mention a wheelchair, pram or child seat before you rely on the ride. Do not assume the vehicle is equipped.
  • Find out how changes and cancellations work, and keep the confirmation and your phone to hand.
  • After a hike, book with a real buffer. If you can only make it by walking fast, the time is wrong.

Check current prices and conditions directly with the operator. A saved booking request is not the same as a confirmed ride.

On foot: what the centre gives you

From the station you can walk into the centre and along the Frankfurter Straße, follow selected stations of the Waagen-Wanderweg about the Chronos scale, or continue to Geistingen and the Kurpark. The town names the footpath over the Horstmannsteg as a way to reach the Allner See, which makes the lake an easy outing without a car. The Kulturlandweg, a marked loop of about 10 km rated as moderate, starts and ends at Hennef station. It is a proper hike with climbs, not a long shopping stroll.

For longer walks on the Natursteig Sieg, remember that stages run from one point to another. One practical order is to take the train to the far end first and walk back towards your accommodation, so there is no timetable pressure at the end. It does not suit every stage, so check terrain and direction.

Bikes: valley or hills, and the ticket question

Decide first between a ride along the Sieg valley and a loop through the higher villages. They are very different days. The Radweg Sieg has stages suitable for families; the stage between Stadt Blankenberg and Siegburg is about 16.5 km.

If you want to bring the bike on the train, check three things separately: your own ticket, a ticket for the bike and the actual space on board. According to the VRS, bikes are not included in the Deutschlandticket. Capacity still depends on the rules and the train, and a replacement bus may not take bikes at all. A family with several bikes should not depend on a single last train. Charging an e-bike needs planning too: a business shown on a map is not a confirmed charging point.
