Most Alhambra visitors plan everything around the Nasrid Palaces slot and then rush the rest. Give the Generalife gardens about 1–1.5 hours and the Alcazaba fortress about 45–60 minutes, and fit them before or after your palace time depending on where your slot falls in the day. The Generalife sits at the eastern end of the site and the Alcazaba at the western end, so the order you choose saves or costs you a lot of walking. Our Granada itineraries include a full Alhambra day built this way.
Think of the hill as a long ridge running roughly east to west:
From the main entrance to the Nasrid Palaces is roughly a 15–20 minute walk at a steady pace. With photo stops and crowds, allow more. This is why your palace slot should drive the order.
The Generalife is a separate estate connected to the Alhambra by a path. Its highlights:
In summer, visit the Generalife early in the morning or in the late afternoon. In the middle of the day the gardens have shade in places, but the paths between them do not.
The Alcazaba is the oldest part of the complex, a military fortress with ramparts, the remains of the soldiers' quarter and towers. The reason to go is the view: from the Torre de la Vela you look over the Albaicín, the cathedral and the plain to the Sierra Nevada.
Access can change. In autumn 2026 the Alhambra reported that the Alcazaba had reopened with an adjusted route after works. Check the current situation on the official Alhambra site before your visit, follow the marked route, and expect steps and uneven surfaces.
Morning slot (early, for example 8:30–10:00): enter early, go straight to the Nasrid Palaces, then the Alcazaba next door. Walk back east through the Partal and the Medina, and finish with the Generalife before the midday heat.
Midday slot: start with the Generalife right after you enter, then walk west, see the Palace of Charles V and arrive at the Nasrid Palaces 15–20 minutes before your time. Do the Alcazaba after the palaces.
Afternoon slot: arrive with enough margin to see the Generalife first and the Alcazaba before your slot, or after it if the site's closing time leaves room. Check the closing time for your date, which changes with the season.
Whatever the order, do not leave the area near the Nasrid Palaces entrance so late that you miss your slot. Late entry is not allowed.
If you cannot get a Nasrid Palaces ticket, the gardens ticket still gives you the Generalife and, when open, the Alcazaba. Add the Palace of Charles V and its museums, which you can usually visit without the full ticket, and try again for a palace slot on another day or for a night visit.
About 1–1.5 hours at a relaxed pace, including the Patio de la Acequia and the upper gardens.
The standard daytime ticket and the gardens ticket have included it. Check the current ticket description and any access changes on the official site.
It depends on your slot. With an early slot, do the palaces first. With a midday or afternoon slot, see the Generalife first, because it is near the entrance and the palaces are at the far end.
The Granada itineraries set the Alhambra as its own full day with timings, and the Granada master guide covers the rest of the city around it. Both are available in English, Spanish or German; choose your edition when you buy.
Times and prices are planning estimates. Check the official Alhambra website for opening times, ticket types and access changes before you go.
