Arrive at Essen Hauptbahnhof and walk to Kennedyplatz for the city-centre Christmas market, using an up-to-date map. For Steele, Werden, Rüttenscheid or Zollverein you need a separate local connection, which you can plan with Ruhrbahn's ZÄPP app. The Essen Advent weekend page shows how arrival fits into a two-day trip.

Arriving at Essen Hauptbahnhof

Essen Hauptbahnhof is the guide's starting point for a day trip and for its evening route through the city centre. If you arrive on a long-distance train from elsewhere in Germany or from abroad, deal with luggage and accommodation first. You can then begin the market visit with your hands free.

From the station, set Kennedyplatz as your walking destination. The canopy of lights there is a useful visual landmark once you arrive. Plan the return before you set off: which connection you want, what the alternative is, and how long you will need from your last stop to the platform.

Using the ZÄPP app and buying tickets

According to its developer, Ruhrbahn's ZÄPP app offers nationwide journey planning, real-time information and ticket purchases for the VRR network. It is a practical tool for visitors who do not know the local network.

  • Enter full addresses: type the complete destination address and the exact travel date, not just a neighbourhood name.
  • Check ticket validity: confirm the geographical area and the people your ticket covers. A suggested connection does not mean your ticket covers every service shown.
  • Save details offline: note key connections separately so you can find them with poor reception.
  • Mobility aids: an assistance feature in an app does not guarantee that every lift and route is usable. Check current service information for your journey.

Neighbourhood markets need their own journey

The guide stresses that a trip to the city centre is not a connection to Steele or Werden. Even a short transfer can change the rest of your day. It suggests calculating each transfer in four parts:

  1. Reaching the stop
  2. Waiting
  3. Travelling
  4. Walking from the arrival stop to the actual entrance

Time on board is only one part of that. For Steele, head for Kaiser-Otto-Platz and save the final walking section too. For Franz Sales Haus, use the address Steeler Straße 261; the similar street name does not mean it is at the Steele market. For Zollverein, note that Ruhr Museum and the ice rink are in different areas of the site.

A simple plan for international visitors

If you are travelling from abroad, one main destination per half-day keeps things manageable. A first evening in the city centre needs no transfer at all from the station. On a second day, choose one neighbourhood or Zollverein and plan that journey carefully, with a decision point after lunch about whether to add anything else.

The guide does not cover airport connections, so plan the onward journey to Essen Hauptbahnhof with your rail provider. At the market itself, ask before buying a drink where you can return the cup and which deposit conditions apply.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit the Essen Christmas markets without a car?

Yes. Use current journey information for your destination and date, for example in the ZÄPP app, and check the right ticket separately.

Is the Christmas market far from Essen Hauptbahnhof?

The guide's evening route walks from the station to Kennedyplatz. Use an up-to-date map, as it does not give a fixed walking time.

Is the guide available in English?

Yes. The PDF comes in English, German and Spanish editions.
