Essen Christmas market 2026: dates and opening times
The International Christmas Market in Essen city centre opens from 13 November to 23 December 2026. Here are the hours, the two November exceptions and the dates of the other markets.
The International Christmas Market in Essen city centre runs from 13 November to 23 December 2026. It opens Sunday to Thursday from 12:00 to 21:00 and on Friday and Saturday from 12:00 to 22:00. City-centre market: the 2026 calendar
The market opens on Friday 13 November, which makes the first weekend a natural time for an early visit. The regular hours are simple to remember: noon until 21:00 for most of the week, and an extra hour on Friday and Saturday evenings. Two exceptions fall in November, and both are on a Sunday.

Last day: Wednesday 23 December
If you are booking a November trip, check these two Sundays first. A weekend visit on 21 and 22 November, for example, gives you only one market day in the city centre. The market does not open on Christmas Eve, so a trip after 23 December needs a different plan.
The other Essen markets and their dates
In Essen, choosing a Christmas market also means choosing a neighbourhood. The smaller markets follow their own calendars, and some details were still unconfirmed when the guide was researched.
Steele: the Initiativkreis City Steele announces a season from 30 October 2026 to 3 January 2027 at Kaiser-Otto-Platz. Individual closure dates and daily hours still need checking.
Franz Sales Haus: Friday 20 November from 14:00 to 19:00 and Saturday 21 November from 11:00 to 18:00, at Steeler Straße 261, free admission.
Werden: the city names Sunday 29 November, the first Sunday of Advent, in connection with the market and Sunday shopping. Full daily hours are not yet confirmed.
Rüttenscheid: winter market from 10 to 20 December, with an art market at Villa Rü on 13 December.
Winter events that are not markets
Two further dates matter for planning, even though neither is a market in the usual sense. The Essener Lichtwochen illuminations are announced from 25 October 2026 to 2 January 2027. They light up the city centre for longer than the market runs, which means you can still take an evening walk after the stalls have closed. Daily switch-on times are not confirmed.
The ice rink at the Zollverein coking plant opens from 5 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, with a small winter village serving drinks and snacks. It is closed on 24, 25 and 31 December, opens from 13:00 to 22:00 on 26 December and from 13:00 to 20:00 on New Year's Day.
How to use the dates when you plan
Set your travel date first, then choose a main interest and a weatherproof alternative. Short-running events such as Franz Sales Haus or the art market at Villa Rü have more influence on your choice than the size of the city. The guide asks four questions for each destination: is it running on your date, when does it open, do you need a ticket, and can you use the entrance you intend to use.
Some organiser pages still show older information. For Rüttenscheid, the 2026 dates sit above an older description. Hours circulating online for Werden refer explicitly to 2025. The Steele market page still covered the previous season at the research date. The guide does not present any of those older hours as a 2026 timetable, and neither should you.
