The International Christmas Market in Essen city centre runs from 13 November to 23 December 2026 and is closed on 22 November. Around it, several neighbourhoods hold their own markets on different calendars, from Steele's long season to a two-day craft market in November.
When is the Essen Christmas market in 2026?
The International Christmas Market in Essen city centre is open from 13 November to 23 December 2026. It opens Sunday to Thursday from 12:00 to 21:00 and Friday and Saturday from 12:00 to 22:00. There are two exceptions: on Sunday 15 November it starts at 14:00, and on Sunday 22 November it is closed. Steele announces a season from 30 October 2026 to 3 January 2027, Rüttenscheid's winter market runs from 10 to 20 December, and Franz Sales Haus holds its craft market on 20 and 21 November.

Where is the Essen Christmas market in the city centre?
The International Christmas Market combines market browsing with the illuminated city centre. You do not need to see every area to enjoy an evening.
The canopy of lights
Kennedyplatz and its canopy of lights give the market a clear visual reference point. It works well as the first stop on an evening visit. The light canopy is a useful landmark, but not a precise meeting point, so groups should agree on an unmistakable spot at the edge of the square instead.
The medieval market
The medieval market at Flachsmarkt is a distinct part of the International Christmas Market. It suits a slower visit spent looking at goods and materials. When you navigate, search for Flachsmarkt together with Essen, because similarly named events take place in other cities and seasons.
Illuminations until 2 January
The Essener Lichtwochen illuminations are announced from 25 October 2026 to 2 January 2027. They add to the cityscape but are not a separate market, and they continue after the stalls close on 23 December. Daily switch-on and switch-off times are not confirmed, so check current notices for a late visit.

Check your exact date, especially 24 to 26 December and New Year.
First Advent weekend
The Werdener Werbering describes its Christmas market as a regular first-Advent-weekend event. For 2026 the city names Sunday 29 November in connection with the market and Sunday shopping. Full daily hours were not confirmed in the organiser information checked, so confirm them before you travel.
Winter market and art market
The Interessengemeinschaft Rüttenscheid announces its winter market from 10 to 20 December 2026, with Sunday shopping and an art market at Villa Rü on 13 December. The organiser's page mixes new dates with an older description, so check the exact location and daily hours.

Franz Sales Haus
The Christmas market at Franz Sales Haus, Steeler Straße 261, opens on Friday 20 November from 14:00 to 19:00 and on Saturday 21 November from 11:00 to 18:00. Admission is free. It offers products from the organisation's workshops, residential groups and special school, including Advent arrangements, gift ideas and homemade treats.
Art market at Villa Rü
The art market at Villa Rü in Rüttenscheid is announced for Sunday 13 December 2026. Treat it as a separate date rather than part of the whole winter-market season. Check hours, admission and exhibitors against the current announcement, and think about space, budget and transport if you hope to buy a work.
Zollverein ice rink
The ice rink at the Zollverein coking plant is announced from 5 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, with a small winter village serving drinks and snacks. It is a winter outing rather than a shopping market. The rink is closed on 24, 25 and 31 December.

Is Zollverein a Christmas market?
Not in the usual sense. Zollverein offers an ice rink at the coking plant from 5 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, with a small winter village for drinks and snacks. It is a winter outing with industrial architecture and skating, and it does not replace a market visit for gift shopping.
