For a visit with children, choose Petite Venise on Place des Six Montagnes Noires, with its carousel and large Christmas letterbox, and add the Toy Museum at 40 Rue Vauban. Visit the museum first, take a proper break, then go to the market in the afternoon. One market is often enough for younger children. The family route is one of six in the Colmar Christmas markets guide.

Petite Venise: the family market

When you plan, search for Place des Six Montagnes Noires rather than just Petite Venise. The neighbourhood is larger than the market, and the square's name saves you looking around for the right spot.

  • Carousel: market entry is free, but rides are not necessarily. Read prices, age rules and conditions on site before you promise a ride.
  • Christmas letterbox: a simple aim for the visit. A personal reply to every letter is not described as a guaranteed service.
  • Holiday hours: on 26 and 27 December the market's own calendar gives an 11:00 start, unlike the general overview.

Prepare the wish letter at your accommodation. Writing it calmly beforehand works better than doing it between shopping bags and waiting visitors. Let the children decide on a small drawing to include.

The Toy Museum

The Toy Museum opens up conversations between generations. One display case can start very different stories: an adult remembers a material, a child notices movement, someone else wonders how the mechanism works.

  • What is there: construction and science toys, automata and robots on the ground floor; dolls, materials and social roles elsewhere; toy trains with two working layouts on the second floor.
  • December hours: daily from 10:00 to 18:00, except 25 December and 1 January. The ticket office closes at 17:30.
  • Prices: €6.50 standard, €5 for ages 8 to 18, free under 8. The family rate applies only from five paid admissions with no more than two adults.
  • Access: a lift between the three levels, adapted toilets and seat sticks on request.

Rather than turning the visit into a test, let each person choose one object that surprises them and explain why. Not every toy can be tried out, so follow the exhibition's instructions.

The order that works

The guide's family route starts in the museum and ends at the market. That keeps the museum from slipping to just before the ticket office closes.

  1. Morning: Toy Museum on Rue Vauban.
  2. Midday: food, toilets and a short rest. The family market is not right outside the museum.
  3. Walk: south through the old town towards Grand'Rue and Place des Six Montagnes Noires. Allow a time buffer for crossing busy market areas; this is not a checked step-free route.
  4. Afternoon: Petite Venise, the letterbox and perhaps one carousel ride.

Before joining the carousel queue, agree how many rides are planned and where the rest of the group will wait. Choose a fixed meeting point that does not block an entrance. If the children are tired, shorten the second stop before you remove the breaks.

A dated event: children singing on boats

A children's choir performance on boats is published for Saturday 12 December 2026, from 17:00 to 18:00, around Pont Turenne and Quai de la Poissonnerie, with free access. It is a single performance, not a daily programme. With a pushchair or several children, arrive early enough to find a place to listen, and keep the sequence simple: market, drink and toilet break, then music.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Petite Venise carousel free?

The listing confirms free market entry, not free rides. Check the price and conditions at the carousel itself.

What does the Toy Museum cost for a family?

Two adults and two children aged 8 to 18 would pay €6.50 twice and €5 twice. Children under 8 enter free. The family rate needs at least five paid admissions.

Can we combine both on 25 December?

No. The Toy Museum is closed on 25 December, so plan a market-only visit that day.

For a full weekend with children, see the Colmar Advent weekend plan, or get the Colmar guide (PDF) with the complete family route.
