Skip to the article ↓For swimming, choose Main Beach or Clarkes Beach, where lifeguards patrol between the red and yellow flags in season. For a sheltered view and small waves, go to Wategos; for surfers to watch, The Pass; and for space and a long walk, Tallow Beach south of the cape, which is beautiful but more exposed and less often patrolled. Our Where to Stay in Byron Bay guide compares the areas, so you can pick a base near the beach you want.
Byron Bay's town beaches run in one long curve from Belongil in the north-west round to Cape Byron in the east. South of the cape the coast changes: Tallow Beach faces a different direction and catches more swell. Knowing the difference matters more than any ranking.
Australian surf beaches are not lakes. Rips, which are strong currents running back out to sea, form on most open beaches and can pull a swimmer out fast.
Parking near the town beaches is paid and fills early in summer and on weekends. Expect to pay a few Australian dollars per hour, more in peak areas; check the current Byron Shire rates and time limits on the signs. Walking from a central base avoids the problem. The beaches themselves are free.
Toilets and showers are at Main Beach, Clarkes and The Pass. Bring water and shade if you head to Tallow, where facilities are fewer.
When the swell is big or a storm passes through, the waves at The Pass and Wategos are worth watching from the cape track, but stay out of the water. Use the day for the hinterland: Bangalow is 15–20 minutes inland by car, or spend the morning at the Byron Bay markets if one is on that weekend.
Main Beach and Clarkes Beach, between the red and yellow flags during patrol hours. Check the patrol times for your dates, because they change with the season.
Often, yes, as it is more sheltered than the open beaches. But conditions change and patrols are limited, so check the signs and the sea on the day and skip it if the swell is up.
Many surf schools use the gentler sections around Main Beach, Clarkes and The Pass on small days. Book a lesson rather than learning alone, and leave The Pass to experienced surfers when it is busy.
To choose a base within walking distance of the beach you want, read Where to Stay in Byron Bay – Best Areas Compared. The Cape Byron headland walk and nine other day routes, each with a rain alternative, are in Byron Bay Itineraries – 10 Day Routes. All guides are in Byron Bay Travel Guides.
Times and prices are planning estimates, not guaranteed conditions or prices. Check patrol times, surf conditions and official signs before you swim.
