An Advent weekend in San Sebastián: arrival, where to stay and a two-day plan
Two days are enough to see both areas of the San Sebastián Christmas market, a food market and a museum at an easy pace. Most international visitors arrive by plane and bus. Here is how to get in, where to base yourself and how to spend a Saturday and Sunday in December.

How do you plan an Advent weekend in San Sebastián?
Arrive on Friday or Saturday morning, either by bus BI01 from San Sebastián Airport to Donostia bus station or by the direct DO04 from Bilbao Airport. Stay where the route to the Parte Vieja or the market areas suits your plans. On Saturday, visit San Martín food market in the morning and the Christmas market by the Urumea from 16:30. On Sunday, see San Telmo from 10:00, walk through the Parte Vieja and visit Plaza Ramón Labayen if your departure is late.

How do you get to San Sebastián for the Christmas market?
The guide covers two airports, the city buses and the rules for drivers.
San Sebastián Airport
The airport is in Hondarribia. Since 1 October 2026, bus BI01 (formerly E30) runs year-round from Terminal 1, stop A, to Donostia bus station, with 21 minutes scheduled for the trip. Departures are not evenly spaced, and there are separate timetables for working days and for Sundays and holidays. The former E21 is now BI02, a different route. The Dbus fare does not apply to BI01.
Bilbao Airport
Aena lists the direct DO04 connection to Donostia, with a timetable dated from 1 October 2026. Towards the airport, the first departure from Donostia is 04:15, then hourly from 05:00 to 21:00. From the airport there are daily departures from 07:45 to 22:45 plus one at midnight, with an extra 06:45 start at weekends. Check stop, price and booking conditions with the operator.
Arriving by car
The centre has a ZBE low-emission zone. Foreign-registered vehicles, including hybrids and electric cars, must be registered before entering. Registration is online or in person through Udalinfo. Ask your accommodation about the approach to its car park, since a booked parking space does not give permission to enter the zone.
Where should you stay in San Sebastián for the Christmas market?
The guide gives no hotel recommendations. It helps you choose an address that suits your plans.
For Santo Tomás and San Telmo
If the Santo Tomás fair on 21 December or San Telmo museum are your priorities, give weight to easy access to the Parte Vieja. For Santo Tomás, staying the night before gives a calmer start than a tightly timed arrival on the morning of the fair, when the first exhibition begins at 09:00.
For arrival and departure
If you arrive on BI01 and want to visit Tabakalera, check the walk from the bus station and locations around Egia. For an early departure, a short and predictable route to the station matters most. For a late one, reliable luggage storage makes an extra market visit possible.
Compare exact addresses
Compare specific addresses rather than neighbourhood names. Check the route to the Urumea or Plaza Ramón Labayen, the check-in time and luggage storage on departure day. With reduced mobility, ask about entrance steps, lift dimensions and room location, which tell you more than a general description.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get from San Sebastián Airport to the city centre?
Take bus BI01 from Terminal 1, stop A, to Donostia bus station. It runs year-round and the timetable allows 21 minutes for the trip. Departures are not evenly spaced, so check the working-day or holiday timetable for your flight. Allow extra time for baggage and traffic, and check the fare with the operator.
Can I get to San Sebastián directly from Bilbao Airport?
Yes. Aena lists a direct DO04 service between Bilbao Airport and Donostia, with a timetable from 1 October 2026 and no detour through central Bilbao. From the airport, departures run daily from 07:45 to 22:45, plus one at midnight. Check the stop, price and booking conditions before you travel.
Which bus ticket is best for a weekend in San Sebastián?
Dbus 2026 fares are €1.95 for a daytime single, €6.40 for a 24-hour QR ticket and €10.60 for a 48-hour QR ticket. Four daytime journeys on single tickets cost €7.80, so the 24-hour ticket is cheaper if you make four trips within its validity. Recheck prices for January 2027.
Is one weekend enough for the San Sebastián Christmas market?
For the Christmas market itself, a weekend gives you time for both areas, San Martín and a museum without rushing. If you also want to see the Feria de Santo Tomás, you need to be in the city on Monday 21 December 2026, so a trip from Saturday 19 to Monday 21 December would cover both.
Do I need a car for a weekend in San Sebastián?
No. The guide's weekend plan uses walking, city buses and the airport connections. If you do drive, foreign vehicles must be registered before entering the ZBE low-emission zone, and you should check the route to your car park and the onward walk with luggage.
