An Advent weekend in Metz: arrival, where to stay and a two-day plan

Arrive at Metz-Ville, leave your bags and start with either art at the Centre Pompidou-Metz or the old town via Saint-Louis. Spread the five squares over two days, with one museum on each day that is not a Tuesday. Choose a place to stay that works for both the station and your last evening stop.

Short answer

How do you plan a weekend at the Metz Christmas market?

Book your train to Metz-Ville, not Lorraine TGV, which needs an onward connection. On day one, walk via Saint-Louis and Fournirue to Place d'Armes and the cathedral, then finish at Place de la Comédie, open until 23:00. On day two, visit the Centre Pompidou-Metz or the Cour d'Or before a market circuit at République. A VISI PASS costs €5.40 and runs until midnight on the day you first validate it. Both museums close on Tuesdays, so plan a Saturday and Sunday or another pair of days.

ARRIVAL

How do you get to the Metz Christmas market by train, bus or car?

The guide works backwards from your first destination. Choose the station and the ticket that fit that plan.

TRAIN

Choose Metz-Ville

Metz-Ville is in the city. Lorraine TGV is a different station and requires an onward connection, so compare journeys including that final leg. From Metz-Ville, the Centre Pompidou-Metz is close by, and the Cour d'Or describes a walk of about twenty minutes via Saint-Louis, Fournirue and Place d'Armes to reach the museum.

BUS

LE MET' tickets

LE MET' lists a single ticket at €1.90, or €1.70 when reloading, and two journeys at €3.40, or €3.20 when reloading. The VISI PASS costs €5.40 and is valid until midnight on the day of first validation. The Tribu day pass at €8.70 covers up to five people travelling together. The fare page was dated 1 July 2025.

CAR

Park-and-ride

At barrier-controlled P+R sites, you need a ticket validated that day or a suitable card to exit. Exit is possible around the clock, which does not mean buses run all night. Foire Expo connects to METTIS B, and Woippy and Rochambeau to METTIS A. A free weekend transport offer had conflicting end dates, so confirm with LE MET'.

OVERNIGHT

Where should you stay for the Metz Christmas market?

The guide does not recommend specific hotels. It gives you a way to compare offers on the same terms.

LOCATION

Two reference points

Compare the journey from your accommodation to Metz-Ville and to your last evening square. If you finish at Comédie, which is open until 23:00, think about the walk back from there. If you leave early on day two, the route to the station matters more. A central address alone does not answer both questions.

COMPARE

Same terms, total price

Compare room category, cancellation terms, breakfast, extra charges and arrival time. If you travel with luggage, ask for confirmed storage before check-in or after check-out. If you need a lift or step-free access, ask for a description of the actual route to the room. Save two options for your date and compare the total cost.

DAY TRIP

Overnight or day trip

For a single short market visit, compare an overnight stay with a day trip. An overnight stay makes most sense if you want a museum and a relaxed evening, or if you plan to see all five squares over two days. The guide's checklist covers arrival time, last stop, return, luggage, access, price and cancellation.

PLAN

Two days in Metz in Advent

A suggested weekend based on the guide's routes. Shorten it freely; walking times have not been measured.

  1. Day 1, midday

    Arrive at Metz-Ville

Leave your luggage and walk towards the old town. Use Saint-Louis, open from 11:00, for a first look around.

  2. Day 1, afternoon

    Cathedral and Place d'Armes

Continue via Fournirue. Visit the cathedral interior before it closes at around 18:00, then browse the square.

  3. Day 1, evening

    Comédie and Céleste

Finish at Place de la Comédie, open until 23:00, or see a booked Céleste performance at the Temple Neuf.

  4. Day 2, 10:00

    One museum

The Centre Pompidou-Metz or the Cour d'Or. Neither opens on Tuesdays; the Cour d'Or breaks from 12:45 to 14:00.

  5. Day 2, afternoon

    République and Saint-Jacques

Regional products at the Chalet Qualité MOSL and the solidarity chalets, then a short circuit at Saint-Jacques.

  6. Day 2, late afternoon

    Back to the station

Pack fragile purchases and head to Metz-Ville in good time. Market closing times do not replace your train time.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is a day trip to the Metz Christmas market enough?

For a first visit focused on two or three squares, a day trip can work well. If you want a museum, the cathedral and an evening at Comédie, or all five squares, an overnight stay gives you more room. The guide suggests spreading the full circuit over a day with breaks or two separate visits.

Which train station is best for the Metz Christmas market?

Metz-Ville. It is in the city and the Centre Pompidou-Metz is close by. Lorraine TGV is a separate station and requires an onward connection, so include that leg when you compare train prices and times. The walk from Metz-Ville via Saint-Louis and Fournirue leads you through the market area.

How much is public transport in Metz?

LE MET' lists a single ticket at €1.90 and two journeys at €3.40, with lower prices when reloading a card. The VISI PASS costs €5.40 and runs until midnight on the day of first validation. The Tribu day pass at €8.70 covers up to five people travelling together. The fare page was dated 1 July 2025.

Is there free public transport in Metz at Advent weekends?

Organiser pages mention free weekends, but they give different end points: until 20 December, or throughout the market season. Confirm the offer for your date with LE MET', especially for 26 and 27 December. Until then, budget for a normal ticket.
