SOUTH KOREA · SEOUL ARRIVAL

How do you get from Incheon Airport to your hotel in Seoul?

The right transfer depends less on the airport than on the station exit nearest your hotel. Here you can compare AREX Express, the all-stop train and the airport bus by area, follow the arrival step by step and see what to do if you land late.

What is the best way from Incheon Airport to Seoul?

It depends on where you sleep. For a hotel near Seoul Station, take the AREX Express; for Hongdae or Yeonnam, check the all-stop AREX train to Hongik University first; for Myeongdong, compare Seoul Station plus a short metro leg with an airport bus that serves the area. Plan 90–150 minutes from leaving arrivals to the hotel door, with immigration and baggage on top. If you land after the last usable connection, use an official taxi or a pickup with a written total.

AREX Express, all-stop train or airport bus?

Work backwards from the hotel entrance, not forwards from the airport. A faster train only helps if the metro change, the lifts and the walk after it are short too.

AREX EXPRESS

Best for hotels around Seoul Station

The Express links Incheon with Seoul Station without the intermediate stops. It is the simplest rail arrival if you stay beside the station or carry on from there by metro or taxi. The catch: Seoul Station is a large complex where airport rail, metro and intercity trains have separate approaches, so the walk inside can take longer than the train map suggests. Check the precise exit and the street approach to your hotel before you land.

AREX ALL-STOP TRAIN

Best for Hongdae and Yeonnam

The all-stop service calls at intermediate stations, including Hongik University, so for Hongdae it is the direct route to check first. You avoid a change at Seoul Station, which matters with heavy bags. The catch: the neighbourhood reaches far beyond the station entrances, and the first exit you see is rarely the right one. Plot the walk from the exit that serves your street.

AIRPORT BUS

Best for Myeongdong, if the stop is close

An airport bus can be the easier arrival when its stop is genuinely near your hotel, because you lift your luggage fewer times. For Myeongdong, compare it with the AREX to Seoul Station plus a short metro leg to Myeongdong or Euljiro. The catch: check where the bus actually stops and whether the remaining walk has stairs or a hill. Road traffic also makes the timing less predictable than the train.

Our suggestion: first-time visitors staying near Seoul Station should take the Express, and travellers heading to Hongdae the all-stop train. In Myeongdong with large suitcases, price the bus against the train. For Jongno / Insadong, Gangnam or Seongsu, plan the onward metro leg to the exact line and exit that serve your hotel. After a late landing, a taxi or booked pickup with a written total is the calm choice.

Incheon to your hotel, step by step

Three stages, each with its own things to check. Do the first one at home, while you still have time and a good connection.

STEP 1

Before you fly: save the whole route

Check which terminal you land at; it is on your booking and it is the starting point for every comparison. Then save the route to the hotel door: station name, line, direction and exit number, plus the hotel name and address in Korean. Keep it offline, not only in an email.

Decide whether you will use a Tmoney card for the metro, and check how you can buy and recharge it with your payment method before relying on a foreign bank card. If a pickup is booked, save the meeting point and the written total price.

STEP 2

At Incheon: choose the train or the bus

After immigration and baggage, follow the signs to the service you picked. On the AREX, check that you are boarding the Express or the all-stop train you need, because the Express does not stop at Hongik University. For the bus, confirm the stop for your area before you get on.

If your flight was late, check the last usable departure for the whole journey now, including the metro leg after it. A train that gets you to Seoul Station is little help if the next connection has stopped. If it no longer works, switch to an official taxi or your booked pickup.

STEP 3

In the city: the last few hundred metres

Tap in and out on the metro as instructed and head for the exit number you saved. Seoul Station and Hongik University are large stations, so follow the signs for your exit rather than the first staircase up.

On the street, compare Naver Map or KakaoMap with the station signs; a straight line can hide stairs, a slope or a long crossing. If you are tired, shorten the walk or take a taxi for the final stretch, and show the driver the Korean address.

Late arrivals, heavy luggage and the flight home

Most transfer problems come from timing and bags, not from the train itself.

Landing late or flying into Gimpo

A late landing is only a problem if you discover it at the airport. Before you fly, look up the last departure that still connects to your hotel station, and keep a backup: an official taxi or a prearranged pickup with the total price and meeting point in writing. Tell the hotel if you will check in late. If your ticket shows Gimpo, you arrive at a different airport and need a separate saved route; the Incheon plan does not apply.

Heavy luggage, lifts and the return trip

With big suitcases, the number of changes and staircases matters more than train speed. Count the lifts on the route, favour the direct all-stop train or a bus with a close stop, and avoid an extra metro change at the end of a long flight. For the flight home, work backwards from your airline's check-in guidance, add a separate buffer for reaching Incheon and check the route again the night before.

How long does it take, and when is it hardest?

Allow 90–150 minutes from leaving the arrivals hall to reaching your hotel door. That is an editorial planning window, not a timetable, and immigration and baggage come on top. Where you land in that range depends on your area, the wait for the train or bus, the metro change and the final walk. The tightest moment is a late-evening landing, when what counts is not the first train but the last full connection. In summer heat or heavy rain, a long walk from the station with luggage feels much longer, so a closer exit or a short taxi ride can be worth it.

    Worth knowing
  • Do not book anything with a fixed time for the evening you land.
  • Check the official fare page before travel: the adult base fare with a transport card was KRW 1,550 from 28 June 2025, and supplements can apply.
  • Test your saved route and Korean address in airplane mode before you leave home.

Before you fly to Incheon

Five things to have ready before you board.

Incheon to Seoul, your questions answered

How long does it take from Incheon Airport to central Seoul?

Plan 90–150 minutes from leaving arrivals to your hotel door, depending on the area and route. Immigration and baggage come on top. Treat this as a buffer for planning, not as a timetable.

Should I take the AREX Express or the all-stop train?

Take the Express if your hotel is near Seoul Station or your route continues from there. Take the all-stop train if you are heading to an intermediate station such as Hongik University for Hongdae. Check which service you are boarding, since the Express does not serve the intermediate stops.

Is the airport bus better than the train for Myeongdong?

It can be, if the bus stops close to your hotel and you have heavy luggage. Compare it with the AREX to Seoul Station plus a short metro leg, and check the walk from Myeongdong and Euljiro stations. Traffic makes the bus timing less predictable.

What if I land after the last train?

Check the last departure for the whole journey before you fly, including the metro leg. If it no longer works, use an official taxi or a prearranged pickup with a written total price and meeting point, and tell the hotel you will arrive late.

Can I use the same plan if I fly into Gimpo?

No. Gimpo is a different airport with its own connections, so save a separate route to your hotel. Check the airport on your ticket before you plan the transfer.

Which Tabiara guide helps with the arrival?

The Seoul Airport to Hotel Guide compares every option by area, with late arrivals and the return trip. If you want the arrival plus areas, metro and day routes in one download, choose the Master Guide instead. Both come in English or Spanish.
