An Advent weekend in Hennef without a car: trains, stay and a two-day plan
Hennef is easy to reach by train, and the first Advent weekend from 27 to 29 November 2026 gives you a clear frame. Arrive on Friday for the opening, spend Saturday morning in Stadt Blankenberg and the afternoon at the market, and keep Sunday flexible.

How do you get to the Hennef Christmas market without a car?
The city lists S 12, S 19 and RE 9 services for Hennef. Search for Hennef (Sieg) in your journey planner, then save the final walk to Marktplatz or Stadtsoldatenplatz. If you travel via Siegburg/Bonn, note that the ICE station is not the same as Bonn Hauptbahnhof, and check your changes. For Stadt Blankenberg, take the train to Blankenberg (Sieg) and allow about 20 minutes uphill. Plan a second return connection as a backup and check engineering works on the day.

How do you reach Hennef and Stadt Blankenberg by train?
The station name alone does not describe the route to the market. Save every final walk before you board.
Into the centre
S 12, S 19 and RE 9 serve Hennef, according to the city's travel information. After you arrive, you still need the walk to Marktplatz or Stadtsoldatenplatz. Save it in advance so you do not start navigating in a crowd. The lines named give orientation, not a promise about every daily service.
Long-distance connections
If your trip involves the ICE station Siegburg/Bonn, do not confuse it with the city of Bonn. A connection through the interchange does not mean a direct train from Bonn Hauptbahnhof. Search from your real starting point and leave a generous margin if you have booked a specific long-distance train.
The station below the village
Blankenberg S-Bahn stop is outside the historic centre. The city gives about 20 minutes on foot uphill, but pace, weather and route can make it longer. Save BlankenbergBf for the train and a separate destination in the village. Do not confuse it with Blankenburg in the Harz.
Where should you stay for a Hennef Christmas market weekend?
Choose accommodation around where your evening finishes. The guide does not list hotel names or sample rates, but it gives you the right questions.
Close to market and station
For a market-focused weekend, accommodation in an easily reached part of the centre is practical. Check the actual route between your room, the market and the station. A general Hennef address may also mean an outlying settlement, so look at the map rather than the town name alone.
Near the historic village
If the hilltop village is your main interest, you could look at accommodation around Stadt Blankenberg. An evening in central Hennef then needs its own return journey. A quiet location is comfortable only when it connects well with your programme, so check late connections before you book.
What to ask before booking
Is the room available on your date? What are the cancellation, breakfast and arrival arrangements? Is late check-in or luggage storage possible? Is access suitable for your mobility needs? Compare the total price including the services you really need, not just the room rate.
How do you get back from Hennef after the market?
It is easier to shorten a market circuit than to replace a missed last connection.
Two return options
Identify your preferred return connection and a second one as a backup. Check engineering works and short-notice changes on your travel day, especially for a late return. If several people travel together, agree who keeps an eye on service updates while the others browse.
The shared taxi
The Anruf-Sammeltaxi links Hennef's centre with outlying settlements, including Stadt Blankenberg and its S-Bahn stop. It runs at scheduled times and must be booked at least 60 minutes before departure on 02241 499999, or via the RSVG app or online. Check the current fare when booking.
Count the walk back
With a fixed train, subtract the walk to the station from your available market time instead of adding it afterwards. Allow time for toilets, coats and bags, especially after the St Nicholas visit on Sunday at 18:00, when the square may be busier than usual.

Frequently asked questions
Can I reach the Hennef Christmas market by train?
Yes. The city lists S 12, S 19 and RE 9 services for Hennef. Search for Hennef (Sieg) and check the walk from the station to Marktplatz or Stadtsoldatenplatz. Look up your actual connection on the travel day, as the named lines give orientation rather than a promise about every service.
Is Blankenberg station in the historic centre of Stadt Blankenberg?
No. Blankenberg S-Bahn stop is below the village, and the city gives about 20 minutes on foot uphill. Include the climb and winter conditions in your plan. If the walk does not suit you, look into the AST shared taxi or another road connection before you travel.
How do I book the AST shared taxi in Hennef?
The city says registration must be made at least 60 minutes before the scheduled departure. The booking centre is on 02241 499999, and the RSVG app and online booking are also available. Have your name, destination, number of passengers, boarding stop and preferred time ready, and mention large luggage.
Can I visit Stadt Blankenberg on Friday evening after arriving?
It is not a good fit. The castle's regular winter opening ends at 16:00, so a late-afternoon visit leaves little time. Our guide suggests staying in the centre on arrival day and giving Stadt Blankenberg its own morning, ideally Saturday.
Can I extend my Hennef weekend to Monday?
You can, but the castle in Stadt Blankenberg closes on Mondays, so Monday is not a replacement day for that part. The central market also ends on Sunday 29 November. If you stay longer, check Hüttenzauber on Stadtsoldatenplatz for your extra day.
