Erfurt Christmas market weekend: arrival, accommodation and a 2-day plan
An Advent weekend in Erfurt works best when you match the date to what you want to see. The second Advent weekend (5–6 December) combines the central market, the craft courtyard and Krämerbrücke. Arrive by train at the main station or use park and ride, and choose your accommodation by its exact address.

How do you plan a weekend at the Erfurt Christmas market?
Pick a weekend between 24 November and 22 December 2026. If crafts interest you, choose 5–6 or 12–13 December, when the courtyard at Fischmarkt 13/17 opens from noon. On Saturday, walk Krämerbrücke in daylight, visit the courtyard after lunch and finish on Domplatz, which is open until 22:00. On Sunday, choose either a monastery visit in its short 11:00 to 12:30 window or skating at Winterberg from 11:00, then a final market visit before Domplatz closes at 20:00.

How do you get to the Erfurt Christmas market?
Decide on your most important activity first, then find a connection that leaves enough time for it.
Arrive at Erfurt main station
The main station is a practical starting point. From there, walk towards Anger or use a suitable tram. With luggage, it is usually more comfortable to go to your accommodation first. A tightly timed arrival is not a good basis for the 16:30 monastery tour, so leave a buffer.
Three EVAG sites with trams
EVAG lists Messe/Wartburgstraße (line 2, about 14 minutes to Anger), Thüringenhalle (line 1, about 9 minutes) and Urbicher Kreuz (line 3, about 20 minutes). These times end at Anger, not at Domplatz. Allow extra time for parking, waiting and the last walk.
The combined P+R ticket
EVAG describes a special combined ticket at the airport: you exchange your entry ticket for a P+R ticket at the payment machine. It lets up to five people travel in fare zone 10 until 03:00 the next day and is needed to leave the car park. Other parking tickets do not work this way.
Where should you stay for the Erfurt Christmas market?
For a short Advent stay, the precise location matters more than a label such as central.
Compare three routes
Check the walk from the exact address to the station, to Domplatz and to your most important extra activity. Someone focused on crafts and the old town has different needs from a visitor booked on the monastery tour or planning a long session at the Winterberg rink.
Entrance, stairs and luggage
Look at the actual entrance, any stairs and how you will arrive with a suitcase. Ask about lifts and room access if you need them. Even an on-site parking space may need a separate reservation or payment, and luggage storage before check-in is not automatically included.
Compare the final price
The guide does not quote hotel prices, as these were not verified. Compare the total for your group and the terms for cancellation, breakfast and late arrival. On departure day, check out times and plan where your luggage stays during a last walk through the city.
How do you get back after an evening at the market?
A market that is open until 22:00 does not mean trams and trains run at the same frequency.
Check the evening service
EVAG describes a ten-minute frequency for many park-and-ride connections on weekdays between 06:00 and 18:00. That does not apply to evenings or weekends. After a late visit to Domplatz, check the actual service from the stop you plan to use.
Set your return plan first
Note your train, the departure time and when you need to leave your last stop. Add a buffer for busy streets and finding the right platform. On Sunday, Domplatz closes at 20:00, so a final market visit is optional if your train leaves earlier.
Choose the right ticket
Choose your ticket by group size, validity area and the journeys you plan. The guide does not give an unverified day-ticket price. A parking receipt or admission ticket only counts as a transport ticket when that is explicitly stated, as with the airport P+R ticket.

Frequently asked questions
Which weekend is best for the Erfurt Christmas market in 2026?
If crafts matter to you, choose the second or third Advent weekend, when the craft courtyard at Fischmarkt 13/17 opens from noon (3–6 and 10–13 December). For the monastery Advent tour, a Thursday such as 3 or 10 December combines both. Any date between 24 November and 22 December works for the central market.
Is there a monastery Advent tour on the weekend?
Not on 5 or 6 December. The public tour dates are 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, 17 and 22 December, all at 16:30. On a weekend, a regular monastery visit with an audio guide is the alternative, but on Sundays it only runs from 11:00 to 12:30 and is a different experience.
Is it worth staying overnight for the Erfurt Christmas market?
It makes sense if you want more than one focus. A single afternoon from the station suits a market circuit and a break. With a night in the city, you can see Krämerbrücke in daylight, spend time in the craft courtyard, enjoy Domplatz in the evening and add Petersberg or the monastery the next day.
Where can I park for the Erfurt Christmas market?
EVAG lists park-and-ride sites at Messe/Wartburgstraße, Thüringenhalle and Urbicher Kreuz, with trams to Anger in about 14, 9 and 20 minutes. Choose one according to your direction of approach. The airport offers a combined ticket for up to five people that also covers tram travel in fare zone 10.
How long does the walk from the station take?
The guide does not give a fixed walking time, because crowds, breaks and pace vary. It suggests starting on foot towards Anger or taking a suitable tram, then planning about half a day for a first visit with a stop at Fischmarkt, an optional detour to Krämerbrücke and a finish on Domplatz.
