ADVENT 2026 · COLMAR · RAIN AND COLD
Colmar Christmas market in the rain: indoor options and a plan B
Of Colmar's six Christmas markets, only the Koïfhus is indoors. On a wet or cold day you can pair it with the Dominican Library, the Toy Museum or the Unterlinden Museum. Each has its own opening days, so the weekday decides which plan B works.

What can you do at the Colmar Christmas market when it rains?
Head for the Koïfhus at 29 Grand'Rue, the only indoor market of the six, with ceramics, glass, wood, hats and jewellery and free entry. Then add an indoor visit that is open on your day. The Toy Museum opens daily in December from 10:00 to 18:00, except 25 December and 1 January. The Dominican Library museum trail is free but closed on Sundays. Unterlinden is closed on Tuesdays, and its medieval rooms are not heated in winter. Keep the outdoor markets short and give the indoor stops a proper time slot.

Which Colmar Christmas market is indoors?
One of the six markets is inside a building. It works well in bad weather, as long as you treat it as a market and not as a waiting room.
Craft inside the old customs house
The Koïfhus market at 29 Grand'Rue focuses on craft: the organiser names ceramics, glass, wood, hats and jewellery. Entry is free. Follow one material or technique and have a proper conversation at one stall rather than rushing every display. On a wet day this is the most natural first stop.
Ancienne Douane next door
The outdoor market on Place de l'Ancienne Douane is right beside the Koïfhus but counted separately. In rain, keep this part short: browse outside for ideas, then go inside to look closely. If you already found something outdoors, use the indoor visit to focus on a single material.
Not a rest area
Being indoors does not make the Koïfhus a place with seating or a checked step-free circuit. It remains a sales venue. If you need a longer seated break, choose somewhere suitable separately. Wheelchair users and visitors with pushchairs should ask the organiser about entrances and levels.
Where can you go indoors in Colmar on a rainy December day?
Three cultural attractions fit well with the markets. They are visits in their own right, with tickets, opening windows and holiday closures.
Toy Museum, 40 Rue Vauban
Open daily in December from 10:00 to 18:00, except 25 December and 1 January; the ticket office closes at 17:30. Admission is €6.50, €5 for ages 8 to 18, free under 8. There are automata, robots, dolls and two working toy train layouts, plus a lift between the three levels.
Dominican Library museum trail
Free, at 1 Place des Martyrs de la Résistance. Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 13:00 to 18:00, and from 10:00 on Wednesday and Saturday; closed on Sunday. Manuscripts and printed works from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, with information in French, German and English. Closed on 25 and 26 December.
Unterlinden Museum
Regular hours are Wednesday to Monday, 09:00 to 18:00, so it is closed on Tuesdays. Full admission is €14, or €17 with an audio guide. Bring a warm layer: the medieval rooms and the Isenheim Altarpiece area are not heated from November to March, so this is not a reliably warm break.
How do you plan a wet day at the Colmar Christmas markets?
Bad weather mostly changes the order of your day. Decide in advance what you would drop.
Let the day decide
On Sunday the library trail is closed, so use the Toy Museum or Unterlinden. On Tuesday Unterlinden is closed and there is no light show. On Wednesday and Saturday the library opens at 10:00, which makes a morning indoors and an afternoon at the markets easy to combine.
Protect what you buy
Wet bags and fragile objects do not mix well. Ask for delicate parts to be packed separately, and think about collecting a larger item at the end of your circuit. For food, ask about storage before you carry it around in the rain for hours.
Keep evening events flexible
The children's choir on boats on 12 December and outdoor visits in general depend on conditions on the day. Check the event listing again before leaving in poor weather. The Marché gourmand has standing tables, not guaranteed seats, so book a restaurant if you need to sit down for a meal.

Frequently asked questions
What if it rains at the Colmar Christmas market?
Only one of the six markets, the Koïfhus at 29 Grand'Rue, is indoors. The others are outdoors and open in any case during their published hours. On a wet day, spend longer in the Koïfhus and add the Toy Museum, the Dominican Library or Unterlinden, checking which one is open on your weekday.
Can I visit all Colmar Christmas markets indoors?
No. The Koïfhus is an indoor market; Place des Dominicains, Ancienne Douane, Place Jeanne d'Arc, Petite Venise and the Marché gourmand are outdoors. The library and museums can complement a visit but have their own opening hours, admission rules and holiday closures, and they are not Christmas markets.
Is the Unterlinden Museum warm in winter?
Not entirely. The museum states that the medieval rooms and the Isenheim Altarpiece area are not heated from November to March. A visit there is worthwhile, but it is not a reliably warm break. Keep a warm layer on and plan a seated, heated stop somewhere else if you need one.
Which indoor attraction is open on a Sunday in Colmar?
The Dominican Library museum trail is closed on Sundays. In December the Toy Museum generally opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00, apart from 25 December and 1 January, and Unterlinden opens Wednesday to Monday. Check the actual date and admission conditions before you set off.
