Bilbao Christmas market in the rain: indoor options and a plan B

On a wet day in Bilbao, make an indoor visit the main event and keep the market visit short. Itsasmuseum, Azkuna Zentroa and Mercado de la Ribera can carry the day, with a few chosen stalls in Doña Casilda Park from 17:00 if the weather allows.

Short answer

What can you do at the Bilbao Christmas markets when it rains?

Shorten outdoor journeys, choose an open indoor visit and limit market time to the stalls that interest you. On Tuesday to Sunday, Itsasmuseum (11:00-19:00, €10, free for everyone on Sundays from 17:00) makes a good main visit, followed by a long indoor meal and, weather permitting, a short stop at the Doña Casilda Park market from 17:00. Azkuna Zentroa is open daily 08:00-21:00 as a centre. Drop the Abandoibarra walk. In persistent rain, move shopping to another opening window.

INDOORS

Where can you go indoors in Bilbao in December?

The guide describes three indoor venues that fit around the markets. Each keeps its own hours, so check the day you plan to visit.

MUSEUM

Itsasmuseum

The maritime museum at the western end of Abandoibarra suits a rainy day before the park market. Regular opening is Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00-19:00, and it is generally closed on Mondays. Admission is €10; free access for the general public is published on Sundays from 17:00. It has lifts and rest areas.

CULTURE

Azkuna Zentroa

The former warehouse is now a cultural centre, open daily 08:00-21:00 as a building. Exhibitions, screenings and food outlets have their own schedules. Free building tours run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 17:30 in Basque and 18:30 in Spanish, lasting about 30 minutes, with registration required.

MARKET HALL

Mercado de la Ribera

The market hall near Casco Viejo combines fresh-food stalls and separately run food-and-drink areas. Fresh-food hours are Monday 08:00-14:30, Tuesday to Friday 08:00-14:30 and 17:00-20:00, and Saturday 08:00-15:00. An open bar does not mean the food stalls are trading. Public-holiday changes need a separate check.

PLAN B

How do you shorten a Bilbao market visit in bad weather?

A market plan involves more time outdoors than a shopping list suggests: journeys, finding your way, waiting and conversations.

FEWER STALLS

Choose a few stalls

Decide in advance which stalls or product types you want to see and limit the visit to those. A first circuit followed by a return to two or three favourites works well in good weather; in rain, go straight to the stalls you care about and leave the comparison for a drier day.

DROP THE WALK

Skip Abandoibarra and extra circuits

The waterfront walk is mostly level and has seating, but in rain or wind one short section is enough, or none at all. In the old town, go straight to Gabonart after your break instead of adding an extra loop through the streets.

MONDAYS

Plan differently on Mondays

Itsasmuseum normally closes on Mondays, with exceptions around public holidays. Do not build a Monday rain plan around it without checking. Azkuna Zentroa may be an alternative after checking its programme, though it needs a different journey plan. On 21 December, Santo Tomás at Arenal is the better focus.

PACKING

What should you pack for a wet December day in Bilbao?

The guide does not promise weather. It recommends checking the forecast shortly before visiting and planning breaks before you set off.

CLOTHING

Footwear and layers

Choose suitable footwear and clothing for time outdoors, including waiting at stops and standing at stalls. It gets dark early in December, and evening sessions at the markets start at 17:00, so dress for a cool, damp evening rather than for the afternoon.

PURCHASES

Protection for what you buy

Protective packaging for valuable or delicate purchases is as useful as a good coat. Ask sellers whether they can package an item for the journey: '¿Podéis embalarlo para el viaje?' A small bag that closes keeps paper-wrapped gifts dry on the way back.

BREAKS

A place for a longer break

Decide beforehand where a longer indoor break is possible, so you need not search under pressure. Casco Viejo has many food options around Plaza Nueva, Calle del Perro and Somera. Your accommodation is also a sensible break between the midday closure and the evening session.

PLAN

A rainy day in Bilbao: museum first, market last

Based on the guide's rainy-day route, for a Tuesday to Sunday with confirmed museum opening and evening park-market hours. It is not a fully covered route.

  1. 11:00

    Itsasmuseum

Start at the museum. Ask about rest areas, loan equipment or a suitable circuit if you need one.

  2. Early afternoon

    A longer indoor break

Choose an open place to eat. Check your next journey and the weather before planning anything outdoors.

  3. Late afternoon

    Short journey to the park

Use a suitable connection to Doña Casilda Park and leave out the longer Abandoibarra walk.

  4. From 17:00

    Selected market stalls

Visit a few stalls only. On a Sunday, museum entry is free from 17:00 if you prefer to swap the order.

  5. Evening

    Finish or skip

In persistent rain, end the day after the museum and meal, and move shopping to another opening window.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What if it rains at the Bilbao Christmas market?

Make an indoor visit the main part of the day and keep the market short. The guide suggests Itsasmuseum, then a long indoor meal, then a few stalls at Doña Casilda Park from 17:00 if the weather allows. The markets are outdoor events, so in persistent rain it is fine to move shopping to another day.

Is the Bilbao Christmas market covered?

The guide does not describe the markets as covered, and its rainy-day route is explicitly not a promise of a completely covered route. Plan for being outdoors at the stalls and choose an indoor venue such as Itsasmuseum or Azkuna Zentroa for the longer part of the day.

Which museums are open in Bilbao on a rainy Sunday?

Itsasmuseum opens on Sundays from 11:00 to 19:00, with free access for the general public from 17:00. Azkuna Zentroa is open daily 08:00-21:00 as a centre, but individual exhibitions and events have their own hours, so check the activity you have in mind.

Is Mercado de la Ribera a good option when it rains?

It can be, if you check the hours. The fresh-food stalls open Monday 08:00-14:30, Tuesday to Friday 08:00-14:30 and 17:00-20:00, and Saturday 08:00-15:00. The food-and-drink areas keep longer, separate hours, so a meal may still be possible after the stalls close.
