Barcelona Christmas market in the rain: indoor options and a plan B
Barcelona's Christmas markets are outdoor fairs, so a wet day calls for a flexible plan. The guide's main indoor addition is the Museu Marítim next to the harbour fair, and a booked visit inside the Sagrada Família can anchor a day in the Eixample. A shorter day is also a perfectly reasonable choice.

What can you do in Barcelona when it rains at the Christmas market?
Start indoors and keep the market part short. The guide suggests the Museu Marítim on Avinguda de les Drassanes, a short walk from the harbour Fira de Nadal at Moll de la Fusta. It opens 10:00 to 20:00, last admission 19:00, general admission €10, free on Sundays from 15:00. Check holiday closures: it shuts at 15:00 on 24 and 31 December and is closed on 25 and 26 December and on 1 and 6 January. A booked Sagrada Família visit is another indoor anchor.
- Indoor addition
- Museu Marítim, Drassanes
- Admission
- €10, free Sun from 15:00
- Closed
- 25/26 Dec, 1/6 Jan
- Not available
- Schooner Santa Eulàlia
Where can you go indoors near the Barcelona Christmas markets?
The guide names two weatherproof anchors and is clear about what each one does and does not include.
Museu Marítim
Treat the museum as a destination in its own right and choose one exhibition area and a break rather than trying to see everything. The building is wheelchair-accessible with a lift to the Espai Mirador; the Jardins del Baluard are described as difficult to access. The schooner Santa Eulàlia is currently unavailable, so do not count on a ship visit.
Inside the Sagrada Família
Tickets are sold online only, and individual visitors use the general entrance on the Nativity façade, Carrer de la Marina. Winter hours are Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 18:00 and Sunday 10:30 to 18:00. On 25 and 26 December and 1 and 6 January, 09:00 to 14:00. The fair outside has its own calendar.
The market as a short visit
At the harbour, choose one main activity: food, crafts or an attraction. In poor weather this part can be brief. If the rain eases, you can continue from the museum to Moll de la Fusta; if not, ending the day early is fine.
Is your rainy-day plan open on the Christmas holidays?
A plan B only works if it is actually open. Christmas in Barcelona brings several exceptions.
Short museum days
The Museu Marítim closes at 15:00 on both days. The free Sunday afternoon idea cannot replace a visit on these dates. On 24 December the metro runs 05:00 to 23:00; on 31 December it runs all night, though not every bus does.
Museum closed
On these four days the museum is closed and the basilica opens only 09:00 to 14:00. Pick a different focus for those dates, or keep a short market visit if the fair is running that day according to its own calendar.
Switch the order
Free museum entry from 15:00 on Sundays changes the plan: harbour first, museum afterwards, if opening hours allow. The guide's sample budget falls from €69 to €59 this way. Keep the holiday exceptions in mind, as this swap only works on an ordinary Sunday.
A rainy day at the Barcelona harbour
Based on the guide's Route 3. Check that the museum and the fair are both open on your day.
-
Morning
Check both places
Look up the museum's hours and the Fira de Nadal programme for today. On closure days, choose another focus.
-
10:00
Museu Marítim
Start indoors when rain is likely. Pick one exhibition area and leave time for a break.
-
Lunch
A seated break
Plan a longer break separately. A market with food does not guarantee seating at every stall.
-
Afternoon
Towards Moll de la Fusta
Walk to Moll de Bosch i Alsina if the weather allows. Save your return journey first.
-
Late afternoon
One main activity
Food, crafts or an attraction. Check individual prices on site, then head back while it is still easy.

Plan around the weather with the guide
The Barcelona guide pairs each market with an option that suits a change in the weather. It lists museum prices, holiday closures and accessibility details, so your plan B is one you can actually carry out.

- Holiday table for museum, basilica and metro

Frequently asked questions
What if it rains at the Barcelona Christmas market?
Shorten the outdoor part and add an indoor visit. Near the harbour fair, the Museu Marítim on Avinguda de les Drassanes is the guide's suggestion. In the Eixample, a booked visit inside the Sagrada Família works as an indoor anchor. The markets themselves are outdoor fairs, and the guide does not promise covered areas.
Is the Museu Marítim open at Christmas?
Not every day. It closes at 15:00 on 24 and 31 December and stays closed on 25 and 26 December and on 1 and 6 January. On other days it opens 10:00 to 20:00 with last admission at 19:00. General admission is €10, and entry is free on Sundays from 15:00.
Can I visit the schooner Santa Eulàlia in December?
The museum's visitor page lists the schooner as currently unavailable. Do not plan on a ship visit, even if a ticket name still mentions the vessel. The museum building itself is the option to check for a rainy day. Check current exhibitions instead.
Is the Sagrada Família a good idea on a rainy day?
It can be, if you book in advance. Tickets are sold online only, and the general entrance for individual visitors is on Carrer de la Marina. Remember that the Christmas fair outside is a separate activity with its own dates, and on several holidays the basilica closes at 14:00.
