INDONESIA · BALI ARRIVAL
How do you get from Bali Airport (DPS) to your hotel in Ubud, Canggu, Seminyak or Sanur?
Every arrival on Bali continues by road, so the real decision is who drives you and how much time you give the journey. Here you can compare the official airport transport counter with a prebooked hotel transfer, see realistic buffers for each area and plan for a late landing or a driver you cannot find.
What is the best way from Bali Airport to your hotel?
Go by car: DPS is served by road, so compare the official airport transport counter with a transfer your accommodation arranges in advance. Prebook if you land late, travel with children or stay outside a town centre; with a simple address in Sanur, Jimbaran or Seminyak and a daytime landing, the counter is a reasonable choice. As a planning buffer after leaving arrivals, allow about 30–75 minutes to Sanur or Jimbaran, 45–120 minutes to Seminyak and 90–180 minutes to Ubud, with immigration and baggage on top. For Canggu, plan at least the Seminyak buffer and ask your hotel for its own estimate.

Airport counter, prebooked transfer or a first night in the south?
On Bali the vehicle matters less than the details: the exact address, who waits for you, where you meet and what the total price includes. A familiar area name is not enough for a reliable quote.
Best for a simple address and a daytime landing
You arrange the car after baggage at the official airport transport counter, so there is nothing to book in advance. Give the full hotel address, not just Ubud or Canggu, and confirm the total price before you walk to the car. The catch: you settle the destination at the end of a long flight, and a villa up a village lane or a property outside central Ubud can be hard to explain on the spot. Check the airport's ground transport page before you travel to see what is currently offered.
Best for late arrivals, families and villas
Your accommodation sends a driver who meets you after arrivals. Confirm the total, whether parking and waiting time are included, the exact meeting point and a contact number you can reach without mobile data. The catch: a flight change or a crowded arrivals area can still separate you from the driver, so agree in writing what happens if you cannot find each other. The transfer is also only as good as the address the hotel has passed on.
Best if you land late and are heading inland
Instead of a long night drive to Ubud or Sidemen, sleep the first night in the south, where the buffer from the airport is shortest, and move on the next day in daylight. A quiet first day in Sanur, with breakfast, a rest and a short walk along the promenade, helps you arrive properly. The catch: one more check-in and check-out, and a second transfer that you book separately.
Our suggestion: first-time visitors to Ubud, and anyone staying in a villa outside a centre, should prebook the hotel transfer and save the driver's contact offline. For a central hotel in Sanur, Jimbaran or Seminyak and a daytime landing, the official counter is reasonable if you confirm the total first. For Canggu, check the exact neighbourhood, since the area is spread out and connecting roads are often congested. After a late flight with an inland destination, a first night in the south is usually the calmer plan.
From DPS to your hotel, step by step
Three stages. The first one, done at home, prevents most of the problems at the airport.
Before you fly: fix the address and the handover
Save the complete hotel address and confirm whether you are staying in central Ubud, a surrounding village, a coastal district or a remote villa. Send it to the hotel with your flight number and ask for a written confirmation of the transfer: total price, parking, waiting time and meeting point.
Check entry requirements and the Bali visitor levy on the official government sites, separately from any transport booking. Save the hotel phone number, the driver contact and the address offline, so you can show them without mobile data.
At the airport: meet the driver or go to the counter
After immigration and baggage, go straight to the meeting point you agreed. If nobody is there, use the fallback you arranged: call the hotel from the number you saved rather than accepting the first offer in the arrivals area.
Without a booking, go to the official airport transport counter, give the full address and confirm the total price before you leave the terminal. Check that your luggage fits the vehicle, especially with children or several large cases.
On the road: the last stretch counts
The drive takes as long as it takes. Traffic, narrow village streets and bottlenecks are normal, and the times on this page are planning buffers, not timetables. Tell the hotel if you will check in late.
In Ubud or on a village lane, the car may not stop at the door. Ask beforehand how the final approach works, whether there are stairs and whether someone can help with bags. Keep the first evening simple: a meal nearby and no fixed booking on the other side of the island.
Late landings, a missing driver and the flight home
Most arrival problems on Bali come from timing, unclear addresses and road time, not from a lack of transport.
Landing late or not finding your driver
A late flight is a good reason to keep the first night simple: a shorter transfer to the south, or a confirmed pickup with the hotel told that you arrive late. Before you fly, agree a fallback in case the driver cannot find you, such as a fixed meeting spot and a number to call. If the plan fails, contact the hotel from the saved number and use the official airport counter rather than an unarranged offer.
Planning the return to DPS
Work back from your airline's check-in guidance, add the road buffer for your area and then extra room for congestion; from Ubud the planning window alone is 90–180 minutes. Book the return transfer a day ahead with the same details: pickup time, total and luggage. Do not put a boat trip from Sanur Harbour or another weather-dependent excursion right before the flight.
How long does it take, and when is it hardest?
After leaving arrivals, allow about 30–75 minutes to Sanur or Jimbaran, 45–120 minutes to Seminyak and 90–180 minutes to Ubud. These are broad editorial traffic buffers, not timetables, and immigration, baggage and exceptional congestion come on top. The wide ranges are deliberate: on Bali, distance is a poor substitute for travel time, and a road that looks direct can pass through continuous development and bottlenecks. Heavy rain slows the roads and makes the last walk with luggage harder. If your dates overlap with Nyepi, movement and services are affected, so get the current arrangements from your accommodation and official notices.

Worth knowing
- Do not book a fixed-time dinner or tour for the evening you land.
- Ask the hotel for its own transfer estimate to your exact address and compare it with the buffers above.
- Check that the address, hotel number and driver contact open in airplane mode before you leave home.

Bali Airport transfers, your questions answered
How long does it take from Bali Airport to Ubud?
Plan about 90–180 minutes after leaving arrivals. That is a broad traffic buffer, not a journey time you can count on, and immigration and baggage come on top. Properties outside central Ubud can take longer to reach.
How long is the transfer to Seminyak, Canggu or Sanur?
Allow about 30–75 minutes to Sanur or Jimbaran and 45–120 minutes to Seminyak. We do not give a separate window for Canggu: the area is spread out and the connecting roads can be congested. Plan at least the Seminyak buffer and ask your hotel for an estimate to your address.
Should I book a transfer in advance or use the airport counter?
Prebook through your hotel if you land late, travel with children or a lot of luggage, or stay in a villa or outside a centre. For a straightforward address and a daytime arrival, the official airport transport counter is a reasonable option. In both cases, confirm the total price before you get in.
What if my driver is not there?
Go to the agreed meeting point first, then call the hotel from the number you saved offline. Agree this fallback before you fly. If it does not work, use the official airport counter instead of an offer made in the arrivals area.
Can I take a scooter from the airport?
We would not. A scooter should not be the default solution in an unfamiliar road environment, and certainly not with luggage after a long flight. Arrive by car and decide on local transport once you know your area.
Which Tabiara guide helps with the arrival?
The Bali Airport to Hotel Guide compares the options by area, with late arrivals and the return trip. If you want the arrival plus areas, getting around and day routes in one download, choose the Master Guide. Both come in English or Spanish.
